Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Reds rally from 4-runs down in the 7th today to beat the Marlins 7-5 in a makeup game.

If it's a one game series, is it still a series?

I say yes, so that makes it six in a row over contending teams/teams with winning records.

Off to Houston ...

Votto builds his case for Rookie of the Year

The Reds' Danny Richar dives safely home past Marlins catcher Matt Treanor to score on a fielder's choice by Ryan Hanigan in the seventh inning. The crowd for the Reds' home finale, which was a makeup game, was announced at 13,565.

CINCINNATI -- Joey Votto admits he thinks about Rookie of the Year, knows he is probably second choice, knows that the odds are long because Geovany Soto made the All-Star team and Soto plays for the Chicago Cubs.
"That doesn't mean I've given up on it, but I sincerely believe that when Geo was the catcher for the All-Star Game it was pretty locked up," said Votto. "But I want to finish strong and I want to play to my best capabilities, but you can't deny what he has done and what that club has done. Playing for the Cubs is a huge, huge deal and I tip my cap to him. He's had a great, great year."

ESPN - Reds vs. Astros - Recap - September 23, 2008

Volquez (17-6) won in his fifth attempt to get his 17th victory. He had three no-decisions and a loss since winning Aug. 29, against San Francisco. He allowed one run, struck out nine and scattered six hits in the longest outing of his career. He walked one.

"Volquez was fantastic," Votto said. "I've never heard so many rave reviews at first base. The runners stopped and said he had the best stuff they'd seen.

"He was pretty electric. You don't see that many guys look that foolish on pitches the way he was making them look and you're talking about good hitters."

That's funny, considering these are the same guys that got no-hit for 16 consecutive innings against Zambrano and Ted Lilly just one a week ago.

Also nice to see MLB fuck up instant replay so quickly after its implementation. Votto got screwed out of a 2-run HR last night.

Reds Fans Left To Wonder, 'Why Now?'

When you look at their numbers since being traded, it is clear that Ken Griffey, Jr. and Adam Dunn have not contributed as significantly to Chicago's and Arizona's respective playoff prospects as their incomes would suggest they should.

Their new teammates contend they bring veteran leadership to the clubhouse. The expected upturn in the White Sox and Diamondbacks win columns hasn't materialized though.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Reds are one of the hottest teams in the National League, if not all of baseball. And they've done it with, granted greatly improved pitching from when Junior and Dunner last graced GABP, especially from Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang.

But since the first of September, the no-names scrambling to make one during garbage time, have trashed any number of contenders playoff hopes. A team that was 10-18 in August, has gone 12-7 so far this month.

The difference? The aforementioned pitching. Improved fundamentals and perhaps no outsized shadows to cope with or sacred cows demanding homage.

They obviously dont have my full attention at the moment, but these guys have been fun to watch lately. You look at the lineups and think "man they are overmatched" but they just keep battling and more often than not lately they are coming out on top.

As a lifelong Reds fan, this type of baseball is all I've really ever asked for. Put forth the effort night in and night out and you'll get our support. I enjoy winning more but just go out there having fun and act like you have the best job in the world from time to time.

With the Astros win and the Mets loss last night, the 'Stros are mathematically still alive, which means they will go with Oswalt on three days rest against the Reds tonight.

Shit. The Reds streak of winning series will end at six. :(

Or can a leopard change its spots?

HOUSTON -- Roy Oswalt beat the Cincinnati Reds again to keep Houston's playoff hopes alive for at least one more day.
The Astros ace allowed two hits and struck out three in six innings to lead Houston to an 8-6 victory last night.
Oswalt has won 23 of 24 decisions against Cincinnati, and the Astros desperately needed this one.

Reds to build around youth

First baseman Joey Votto, 25, is finishing his first full major-league season.

CINCINNATI -- Maintenance workers taped broken windows, re-hung signs and swept away debris in Great American Ball Park last week, in the wake of the high winds that blew through town just before the final homestand. Cleaning up the Reds roster in the wake of another losing season will not be so easy, but at least there is the potential for real renovation.
The trade winds that blew through the clubhouse in July and August were a start. For better or worse, the Reds will no longer be defined by Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn. Free agency offers another opportunity, and general manager Walt Jocketty has a history of high-profile trades.
