Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Don't try to fool yourself into thinking this team is anything more than a .480 team.

I know there are 3 games left, but if they win two of the 3 left to play, they'll end up at .481 as .480 is 77.76 wins in 162 games.

Pretty good if I do say for myself. They have 76 wins, which is about where I envisioned them going into the year.

They are at least a season away still. Too much deadwood at this time.

Like Fungo's long lost cousin said above, the team itself looks completely different from the beginning of the year, but projecting the starting lineup now for next april is only going to generate false hope this far out.

Remember that Rolen absolutely HAS TO stay healthy (something he hasn't done in nearly 7 years or something like that) AND the kids need to step up. That's a LOT to ask over a long season.

I still think they are a year away and I think they could really put something together for 2011.

Dusty's an idiot. I've actually been watching some of these weeknight games and they actually look like a major league team. I'm fighting the urge to get excited for next season, but failing....

1B: Votto
2B: Phillips
SS: Janish/FA
3B: Rolen
LF: Gomes/Nix
CF: Stubbs/Dickerson
RF: Bruce
C: Hernandez/Hanigan
Bench: Nix/Gomes, WT (:ohwell:), Hanigan/Hernandez, Dickerson/Stubbs, Sutton, Roseales/Janish

SP: Arroyo, Bailey, Cueto, Harang, Volquez
RP: Owings, Herrera, Fisher, Burton, Masset, Rhodes, Cordero

Others: Miller, Tatum, Richar, Balentien, Barker, Francisco, McDonald, Lehr, Maloney, Ramirez, Viola, Wells

An upgrade at SS and I dare say the Reds would have ML talent at every position.

My hopes aren't high yet. Not when I see Dusty running WT and Janish at 1-2 in the lineup. Until I see Dusty bench WT, I have no confidence that this team will be great. How can the man be so dim?

I wouldnt be surprised if Todd Frazier took over full time duties in LF next year..and you can kiss Hernandez goodbye this off season with his 8 1/2 mill option for next year.

They gave up a grand slam to a pitcher. :slappy:
Ouch. That's bad. Reminds me of earlier in the year when against the Tribe, the Rays made a lineup card blunder forcing them to bat their pitcher (I believe Sonnenstein) 3rd. They proceeded to ape rape the Tribe, I think, 10-2 after the pitcher managed a couple hits (including a deeeep double) and 3 RBIs. I thought that was the season's low point. I was wrong.

Ben Francisco had a great game that day. Too bad Sonnastine is the only MLB pitcher he can hit. :slappy:

That was also the day Wedge had Garko in left and Derosa at first.

Yep. Francisco going in was like 6-8 with 3 HRs for his career vs. Sonnenstein. Wedge batted him 9th. :so:

Nobody ever accused him of being smart.

I watched that game... Zobrist was involved, and Longoria had to sit due to the lineup error... I think Zobrist was 3B and Eva was DH, I just remember her being really pissed off
There was no DH, the pitcher had to bat...and bat he did...all over our sorry asses.

Rays vs. Tribe, no DH... I don't follow

Although that's the way baseball was meant to be played....

I remember a lineup error, and something was screwy, but how was there no DH involved?

BTW, I make a motion that hijacking this thread is now OK... hear ye

Lineup error pregame. I'm not sure what it was, but it forced TB to bat their pitcher 3rd. They still creamed us and the P looked like Manny Ramirez.

Did Bronson Arroyo cheat? Cardinals say he did

By Hal McCoy, Staff Writer Updated 6:17 PM Thursday, October 1, 2009
CINCINNATI ? Nothing like a little mud-slinging to spice up next season?s Cincinnati Reds-St. Louis Cardinals rivalry, which begins on Opening Day.
Most likely that game will be pitched by Bronson Arroyo for the Reds, part of the current controversy during which Cardinals manager Tony La Russa accused Arroyo and the Reds of cheating.
Reds manager Dusty Baker reacted harshly over the charges and said, ?Where I come from, man, you call somebody a cheater, you better know what you?re talking about. That?s like calling somebody a liar, a snitch, a cheat or a thief. Those are strong words when you call somebody a cheater and I?m the man in charge over here.?
La Russa and Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan believe Arroyo used pine star to sticky-up baseballs that were slick Wednesday, Sept. 30, devoid of the Delaware mud that is normally rubbed on them before games.

Sounds like Smoltz is a sore loser.

Pretty funny that they didn't even bitch about it until later, and then when they did, Smoltz admitted the balls were slick, which is about the opposite of putting pine tar on a baseball... I know it's odd that Bronson finished the season untouchable, but he did, and the H.O.F.'er Smoltz had a bad day, so it was time to bitch.

Dusty finally got one right. Whoopty MF Doo. Er, I think I mean Wappa MF Goo. Either way.

Nanerpus.

To avoid future hijacks, I motion we merge the Reds and Indians threads and call it "Shitty Ohio baseball (official thread)".
