You see it at football programs all over the nation. Star quarterbacks move on, other guys move up the depth chart and are handed the ball by coaching staffs, and all the talk is about how big the shoes are they must fill.

</td> </tr> <tr> <td align="left" valign="bottom">By Jay LaPrete, AP</td> </tr> </tbody></table> This Saturday, teams that were quarterbacked in recent seasons by two of the more successful signal-callers in the nation face off in an intriguing non-conference matchup when North Carolina State (1-0) hosts No. 7 Ohio State (2-0).

Early reviews for the Buckeyes' Justin Zwick and North Carolina State's Jay Davis have been positive, although there have been the expected growing pains from replacing players such as the Wolfpack's Philip Rivers and OSU's Craig Krenzel.

Krenzel quarterbacked Ohio State to the national championship two seasons ago and a repeat victory in the Fiesta Bowl last year before catching on with the Chicago Bears as a fifth-round draft pick.

Rivers, a record-setting four-year starter at N.C. State, parlayed his standout college career into the No. 4 overall pick in last spring's draft. He was taken by the New York Giants and traded to San Diego.

Zwick, a redshirt sophomore, played in only four games last year, throwing eight passes, but he already has proved up to the task as he takes the reins of one of the nation's highest-profile programs.

He had a huge game last week against Marshall, passing for 324 yards and three touchdowns and marching the Buckeyes down the field in the closing seconds to set up Mike Nugent's winning 55-yard field goal in a 24-21 escape.

He's passed for 537 yards and four TDs in OSU's first two games but also has been intercepted four times.

Davis, a redshirt junior, played in 10 games the last two years. In his one start this season, he completed 16 of 22 for 168 yards, almost matching his total from the previous two seasons (177), and had two TD tosses and no interceptions vs. Richmond.

But beyond the numbers for both, leadership ability will likely determine if they succeed or fail.

"That's the life of a quarterback," Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said after the Marshall game. "The ball's in your hand and you have to make decisions, and hopefully you learn when the decisions you make aren't quite what they should have been.

"But I think (Zwick) handled it all. There were some times where it just didn't work out for him, but he wasn't going to stop competing, and he took us down and gave us a chance to win the game in regulation. So you have to feel good about that, and you also have to be working on the things that we're not doing well enough yet, and he'll do that."

Zwick said he hopes being able to pull out a narrow victory is a confidence boost.

"I feel good about the win, but I don't feel good about a couple turnovers we had that were my fault," he said. "I've still things go to work on.

"I've been here a couple of years, and I know the offense. It's a matter of working hard to make myself and the team better."

Davis, who got the nod in preseason camp from Wolfpack coach Chuck Amato after competing for the job with redshirt freshman Marcus Stone, said that while he longed to play rather than sit behind Rivers, he took advantage of what he termed an educational experience.

"You need to learn as much as you can, and playing behind a guy like Philip was great because he was so smart checking off, reading defenses, seeing how guys line up," Davis said.

"He taught me how to watch film and what to look for. He was almost a player-coach on the field, a guy who knew lots of things and put people in the right position to win."

N.C. State didn't win against the Buckeyes last year, however. The 44-38 triple overtime decision gives the Pack something to remember heading into Saturday.

"We've been watching our game from last year, and we're looking to do some things differently," Davis said. "They're a great team, and it's going to take a lot to beat them."
