Mabel Freeman, assistant vice president of Undergraduate Admissions and the First Year Experience program, said that although the total number of last year\'s applicants decreased, the number of admitted students went up. She said this does not mean a drop in the quality of students - only the number of applicants. She also said the decrease in applicants has lessened the workload for reviewing the applications and admitting the incoming students.

Freeman also commented on the change of the application\'s essay portion. The application used to have four short answer questions and this year\'s applicants will only have two questions, Freeman said.

"We were very willing to make that change," she said. "We do not need to apologize for asking people to write on a college application."

Ryan Searfoorce, a senior in economics, received the student recognition award. Searfoorce is an honors student with a 3.91 grade point average.*

"I am deeply honored to receive this award today," Searfoorce said. "I also want to thank you for the four years I\'ve had at Ohio State."

Searfoorce also expressed his gratitude to his professors.

The meeting was preceded by an official signing of a memorandum of understanding between Battelle and OSU. Carl F. Kohrt, president and CEO of Battelle, and Holbrook signed the memorandum on behalf of their respective organizations.

According to a statement, the memorandum of understanding was signed "to enhance the strong collaboration" between OSU and Battelle.*

The memorandum stated both institutions "desire to cooperate in an effort to advance the conduct of scientific research and to attract talent, funding and capabilities into areas of joint interest."':wink2:aragraph[1] = 'The memorandum outlined three areas that might be involved in potential collaborative activites.

OSU and Battelle will share facilities by "optimizing use of under-utilized facilities currently owned" by OSU and Battelle and "collaborative design (and) construction of new facilities for joint occupancy." To facilitate these goals, both institutions may coordinate on new construction plans and inform each other about "applicable strategic facilities."

Both institutions will also share staff arrangements so as to use "relevant talent into projects of mutual interest."

Battelle and OSU both identified priority areas of mutual interest. They will prepare letters of intent, binding documents and related documentation when collaborative activities occur.

"I really do think it\'s a landmark movement," Holbrook said. "It\'s just a phenomenal opportunity."

At the beginning of the meeting, Holbrook stated the "the overarching principles of making Ohio State a distinguished research and education" institution.

She mentioned three goals for OSU: to provide a distinctive educational experience for all students, form cutting edge interdisciplinary research and enhance connection between these two.

According to a Nov. 6 Associated Press article, board members voted to give Holbrook a 3.5 percent raise which will result in a salary of $352,000 a year. Holbrook, who is in the third year of her five-year contract, began with a salary of $325,000.

The Associated Press stated Holbrook\'s contract includes a house, housekeeper, two cars, a driver and $100,000 a year in deferred compensation.

She also is eligible for an annual bonus of one-fourth of her base pay for meeting goals and for exemplary performance. Including bonuses, Holbrook will receive $437,000 this year.

Am I wrong or has tuition gone up for students every year she has been there?

I haven't read this whole thread so if someone mentioned this please forgive me.
I can't help but think of her and her salary when she stated that the university was going to clamp down on students selling their football tickets to make a few extra bucks.
She said something along the lines that she was tired of this school giving this students such a huge break on the ticket prices and then to see those students only abuse it by selling them for beer money.
Heaven forbid a struggling college student make a few extra bucks Karen.
By the way, could I be your personal driver?

Obviously I mean anonymous on here, "Kreskin".

Hey, if you did it, fine. But you have to see why someone would doubt this story. The internet (hell, this forum) is full of a lot of shit. Yours just had a whiff of that.

JC,
Yea, I can see your reluctance. The whole reason I started it anyway was
because I thought it odd that she would respond to an e-mail that was obviously full of sarcasm toward her. I am glad you enjoyed the Kreskin line, though.

Well, if it is one of her pet programs (physics, biology...basically anything that can get the university millions in grants, even if it has no positive effect on student's tuition or education), they love her, elsewhere not so much I'd say...

She's trying to spend money on creating "research track" professors (IE, government grant getter track) that never teach, which helps the programs like biology who care more about having distinguished faculty than good students, but diverts money that could be spent lowering class size or keeping tuition low
Great post. I think is one of the largest problems with the college education system. God forbid the school actually go after teachers who actually teach the class.

The SBC deal being nixed by UM is just another in a long line of ridiculously stupid things that UM has done. And we, as OSU fans, should be smart enough to realize that the SBC deal was a GOOD thing.

Pretend for a second that the SBC deal went through. You're talking to your buddies about the game next weekend. Would you refer to it as the "SBC Classic?" Or would it just be "OSU-scUM?"

Who sponsors ABC's halftime show? Do you know?
What about the Independence Bowl? The Hawaii Bowl? The Sun Bowl?

Do you get it yet? We're so inundated with advertising that we don't even notice it anymore. Advertisers even realize this, they are just hoping that their overt advertising efforts will amount to subliminal advertising. They are hoping that by sponsoring a game and getting the TV commercials that go with it, that their jingle will be in your head when you decide to buy a cell phone, a garage door, or life insurance.

Texas-Oklahoma is already the "SBC Classic." When ESPN talks about the game, they will not refer to it as "the SBC Classic" because half their audience, if they recognize it at all, would think the SBC Classic is Texas-Oklahoma.

And in the end, who really cares if there are more SBC commercials than Dodge commercials during the game? That's what this deal amounts to. SBC was willing to pay $1.6m for the right to play their commercials more than some other company's commercials during the game. What difference does that make?

In the end, that would have been $530,000 per year that OSU could have spent on scholarships. They could have sent 100 kids to school for a year just because SBC wanted to show a few more commercials.

I understand the "keep the game pure" argument, but if that's really your position, you lost that battle decades ago.

At this point, it's a cost-benefit analysis, and Mary Sue Coleman at scUM turned down $1.6m in free money for no good reason, and we're all apparently going along with it.

It's like that everywhere.

http://www.detnews.com/2003/schools/0311/13/c01-322181.htm

http://64.233.161.104/search?q=cach...062159720.xml+michigan+tuition+increase&hl=en

She makes $677,000 per year and turns down the $1.6m from SBC, only to raise tuition. Again.

Just another reason to hate scUM. Arrogant asses.

Not to defend her, but that only makes sense.

tOSU is not there for undergrads. And at any research institution, the undergrads are there to pay for the infrastructure, the prof salaries, the maintenance, and for grad students' tuition. That's what they are there for. Profs aren't there to teach classes well, they are there to supervise TAs and GAs, advise grad students, get grants and do research. Teaching, for them, is a waste of time.

If you want to go to school and have your profs care about you and teach as well as possible, then go to Kent State. Go to Akron. Go to BG or Toledo or Wright State. tOSU is a name brand on your diploma as far as undergrad is concerned. It looks more impressive than any of those other schools, and you can get cheap football tickets for four (or five, or six, or seven) years. That's it.

So lowering tuition is not going to happen. Any increase is almost definitely permanent, and keeping tuition stable is not a concern. Stable tuition is anti-competitive. And smaller class sizes just means fewer tuition dollars.

Lowering tuition and keeping class sizes small would do absolutely nothing toward attracting better students. You attract better students by climbing in the rankings. And you climb the rankings by gaming the system. You game the system by hiring better known profs, securing research grants, getting your school's name out there in research journals and in the papers by making big discoveries.

You do not make a name for yourself by teaching smaller classes. Anyone interested in small classes is going to go to Oberlin or Kenyon or Dayton anyway.

Now, hate Holbrook if you want. But she isn't the reason why OSU is going in this direction. She was probably hired because of her willingness to go down this path, but if she is fired, whoever replaces her will do the exact same thing. If you don't like it, you might want to separate your love for OSU athletics from your love for the school, because it's only going to get worse.

tOSU, academically, is trying to be another Michigan. I think within the next 20 years, if they keep doing what they are now, they will do it. When that day comes, it will be that much more enjoyable to see OSU beat UM on the field and in the classroom. And when that day comes, the "better" students will come with it.

The thing is, your children won't be there, because those students will all come from out of state. See scUM for examples.
