Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Well, if the knock on RichRod is that WVU didn't win the big games, one look at Cal's results ought to disqualify Tedford x2.

I disagree with the knock then. Sans this season out in Berkeley, losing big games by a few points to national championship USC teams is much different than outright choke jobs vs. 5 TD underdogs with a national championship on the line. Dick Rod reminded me so much of Coop during that Pitt game, I just can't believe anyone would celebrate his hiring at tsun.

RichRod will have to tone down some of his recruiting tactics...when you are at a WVU, folks just kinda shake their heads when a few rules are [strike]blatantly broken[/strike] bent a tad...but when you are at a Michigan, well, those things happen to end up in the papers.

I sent out a PM about this time last year dealing with RR and recruiting...someone might still have it.

Not just this year. Last year they didn't even make it to the showdown with USC. They were 6-0 in the Pac-10 before honking one at Arizona. No team's done more than Cal to earn a reputation of looking like world-beaters only to fold as the season goes on.

Is there much reason to worry about where Pryor may end up now?

I mean I realize that there is a long ways to go, and that tOSU is still in great position, but I can see how Pryor would have new interest in Michigan with RR.

Same coach that he liked at WVU, with the offense that he wants, at a big-time school that will put him next to other great players and in the national spotlight.

Not panicking, but just concerned.

If R-Rod did in fact call Pryor this morning, which was within a quiet period, I wish the NCAA would quickly react to a recruiting violation by stating that a team coached by Rodriguez is no longer an option for Pryor. To me, that's a way of making the penalty fit the violation.

Hey, I'm consistent - I had the same stance regarding Joe McKnight and USC last year ater he had apparently received phone calls that weren't permissable under NCAA regulations (allegedly made by Reggie Bush).

I know this will never happen - the NCAA would have to act quickly and logically, a near-impossible combination for them.

EDIT - my bad, despite the name 'Quite period", phone calls are allowed during that time. Thanks, sandgk

RR is a snake. He'll do anything, at any cost, to get TP to UM. I don't trust him, and I find this hire to be highly suspect by the Michigan people. It should be comical to see this transformation unfold.

No doubt. And by letting him know yesterday at the game before he let anyone else know, he probably scored some points towards forming a bond with TP.

Some of the shots at RR do seem a bit premature.

It may have been mutually agreed that he not coach the bowl game. There are reasons from unpopularity in Morgantown to conflicts over recruits that might make his leaving now mutually beneficial. (Although this departure is not without context given the game he played only a year ago.)

As for his teams being soft - he was still recruiting at WVU and that isn't easy. I was a huge WVU basher two years ago, but 33-4 over the past three seasons is solid by any standard. White was not 100% in either of his two losses this year - and in his system White was everything.

On the other hand his recruitment of Divine and other marginal scholars opens the door to questions. Desmond Howard was asked about RR on Sports Center the other night and one of his comments was to the effect that Michigan's compliance department might operate a little differently than he is used to. Granted, it is easier to recruit at UM than WVU, but willingness to compromise is a character trait that follows you from scenario to scenario.

In any case - anecdotally at least - there seem to be as much room to question his character as to praise it at this point. There certainly were few sticking up for him in the WV boards at this time last year and fewer still now. Having had only one major coach (Gary Williams) leave the OSU program for greener pastures voluntarily in my lifetime leave me little room for comparison.

same here, after reading on other places and stuff, i have some concerns as well, seeing how quickly pryor put michigan on his list makes me think he's gonna strongly consider it.

One other thought as regards his pursuit of Pryor. This could be a major test of his already questionable diplomatic skills.

He has an ordained starting QB returning as a true Soph next season. What song does he sing to Pryor that sounds as sweet to the ears of Ryan Mallett? Particularly if he loses the Pryor sweepstakes.

My take on it from the three main positions: WVU, scUM, and TP.

WVU.

I feel bad for the players and the fans. Personally, I believe that had RR decided to stay there; then in the long run he would have had a more impressive resume and legacy than Nielen. I should note that I do have familial roots in WV which are already quite perturbed at this outcome.

scUM.

I agree with the former poster that this parallels Callahan at Nebraska (system-wise). I don't think that this hire is going to bring scUM back up to their former glory any time soon. Even if...

TP.

Terrelle Pryor and his potential interest in WV. As we've seen throughout the past year in recruiting, scUM has done little-to-nothing to improve their already suspect defense. IF TP goes to scUM simply because of the offensive scheme; then I wish him well. He's going to have to have Heisman type numbers just to keep the team in the game.

Overall, I just don't understand this hire. But since this thread is about RR, I'll just end by saying I think he's a wretched fit for the winningest program of all time.

May Tress whoop your ass on a yearly basis, and shall your tears coat the TV screen.
