Well crap. :(

One of my childhood heroes and one of the few men I ever had the privilege to meet who truly were better human beings than their myth portrayed.

He will be mourned by his family families and friends; he will be mourned by his nation; he will be mourned by the people of the world; he will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send a son into the unknown.

In his exploration, he stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in his humbleness, he bound bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man?s search will not be denied. But this man was the first, and will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

When/where did you get to meet him?

Initially back in the 70's while he was at UC. My grandfather and he had become friends and I went out to his farm a few times.

I also (much) later had some interaction with him through AIL/EDO.

BTW In case anyone is not familiar with the memorial I quoted above, it is taken (paraphrased) from the speech that President Nixon had prepared to deliver in case the astronauts were unable to return from the moon.

Gus Grissom was a great uncle of mine and would have been the first to step on the moon.

Unfortunately, he and his crew perished in the Apollo 1 fire.

NASA continued despite and soon enough we got to the moon.
I wasn't alive for the day Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, but damn it must of been great.

RIP Neil.
