2018 Rivals/Scout/etc. National & Regional Rankings

The fact that almost every Buckeye commit and target dropped in rankings, though most of them had great showings in The Opening is the most surprising
Not surprising at all. It happens every year. Buckeye commitments get downgraded, Bama and scUM commitments get bumps. Nothing to see here....

I'll go ahead and break down the new 247 on the relevant moves, along with my thoughts where applicable:

4. DE Micah Parsons (up 1 spot, where he should be rated imo)
8. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (up 19 spots, well earned)
10. OL Jamaree Salyer (up 2 spots, was dominant so well earned)
11. TE Jeremy Ruckert (up 24 spots, great camp and well earned)
14. LB Palaie Gaotete (down 7 spots, in the range he should be in though imo)
15. OL Jackson Carman (only down 2 spots after a steady performance...probably too much ado made about temporarily losing 5 star status, that will be easily 5 star range by the end of the year)
16. WR Kamryn Babb (up 2 spots after a good showing)
18. DT Taron Vincent (down 8 spots and no idea why, had a great Opening by all accounts)
20. DB Tyson Campbell (up 20 spots, well earned)
27. DB Anthony Cook (down 22 spots...was reportedly a bit shaky at the Opening, so not a huge shock...still eventual 5 star status)
31. LB Solomon Tuliaupupu (up 21 spots, well earned)
33. DB Josh Proctor (down 8 spots after a steady performance...not a huge move down, still a little surprising though)
42. DB Jaiden Woodbey (down 11 spots and this is the most surprising to me...literally every report I read was glowing and he just cam off a few other great camp performances...no idea what the thought was here)
45. ATH Jaelen Gill (down 4 spots and again, not a big move but he had a fantastic showing and dropped somehow...no explanation here)
50. RB Master Teague (up 152 spots and is one of the biggest movers...well earned, flat out dominated at the camps)
51. LB Dallas Gant (down 28 spots...not sure what really warranted falling that far, still higher than the other services though)
55. OL Matthew Jones (down 9 spots but did not do the Opening, so not a shocker)
56. DE Brenton Cox (down 8 spots after a really strong Opening, again...not sure what the justification is here)
58. OL Max Wray (down 7 spots but did not perform at the Opening, so not a huge drop)
71. DE Tyreke Smith (up 78 spots, well earned after tearing it up at the Opening and other camps)
82. QB
Emory Jones (down 8 spots and did not perform at the Opening, but being this low in the first place is baffling...kid is a 5 star)
114. RB
Brian Snead (down 11 spots but not really a guy that shoots up at camps/combines, not bothered by this one)
129. DB Houston Griffith
149. LB
Terjada Mitchell (down 12 spots and he was too low to start with...but also doesn't shine at camps, again not bothered here)
161. DE Jayson Oweh (up 124 spots...everyone is starting to take notice of this kid's potential, so not a surprise)
166. OL Verdis Brow (down 8 spots but pretty sure he hasn't been at many camps, so not a shocker)
189. WR L'Christian Smith (down 3 spots...too low to start with but was told he had a nice showing, so not sure why he dropped)
216. LB Chris Oats (up 40 spots)
219. LB Michael Harris (up 24 spots after some good camps)

Same thing every year since I've been following recruiting closely (18 years?). Assigning rankings (differentiating kids) in the top 250-500 is like splitting hairs. There are exceptions to that and occasional huge misses, of course, but none of these moves up or down are a big deal. Glad for the kids who worked hard and got bumped up though.

I really have no problem with any of those changes. Moving down 4-8 spots is more a reflection of some other guys like Teague and Ruckert getting bumped up. Maybe Oats moving up so far was a little surprising.

That was my feeling on just about every move really, only took issue with 2-3 of them really. And it is early in the cycle, this is just for entertainment purposes.

Utah?

I wonder why DE is so terrible, while being surrounded by quality football states. They're not all that much smaller than MD or NJ. Is it just the lack of a D1 school?

DE only has 103 high schools, the least amount of high schools in the country. MD has 582 (D.C. has 99 that isn't included in that total) and NJ has 964.

New Rivals 100, with the movers/sliders based on the last rankings:

3. DB Patrick Surtain (-1 spot)
4. WR Amon-Ra St. Brown (no change)
6. DE Micah Parsons (-1 spot)
9. DB Anthony Cook (same)
10. OL Jamaree Salyer (+1 spot)
11. DB Isaac Taylor-Stuart (earned his 5th star)
13. OL Jackson Carman (same)
15. LB Terjada Mitchell (+30 spots and earns his 5th star)
18. QB Emory Jones (-1 spot, still 5 stars)
21. DT Taron Vincent (-3 spots, still 5 stars)
27. ATH Jaelen Gill (+22 spots, one spot away from a 5th star and the highest 4 star)

29. ATH L'Christian Blue Smith (+2 spots)
31. DE Brenton Cox (+1 spot)
34. RB Brian Snead (-6 spots)
35. DB Jaiden Woodbey (+16 spots)

47. DB Houston Griffith (-3 spots)
49. OL Rasheed Walker (+44 spots)
53. DE Tyreke Smith (+54 spots, continues to climb higher and higher)
54. DT. Michael Thompson (-17 spots)
70. OL William Barnes (-10 spots)
83. TE Jeremy Ruckert (+126 spots, still think it is low but a big jump through Rivals)
84. LB Solomon Tuliaupupu (-26 spots)
94. LB K'Vaughan Pope (+16 spots)

- Obviously the rankings will change but currently we already have three 5 stars and typically at least the #32 spot and up are 5 stars. If things go like I think they will go, that would give us nine 5 stars (Parsons, Cook, Carman, Mitchell, Jones, Vincent, Gill, Smith and Cox). Sometimes they go as far as the top 35, which would be eleven 5 stars  Even if things don't shake out like that, I think we legitimately get 6-7. And then a slew of highly rated top 100 guys. Just an absurd class so far.
