Roger Goodell (official thread)

Two of my favorite quotes from that dumpster fire of a press conference:

"I did not consider resigning because I acknowledged my mistakes." Oh, that's how it works? Are you the face of a multi-billion dollar corporation who makes $44 million a year or a 5th grader?

"We will punish behavior that is totally unacceptable." Very bold stance there. Bravo, commish.

That quote, capturing both his lack of intelligence and his arrogance, pretty much is Roger Goodell in a nutshell. I just can't figure out why the owners don't sack this guy--a massive (probably understating it) PR nightmare occurs under his watch, and now the OTL report... Sure the NFL makes tons of cash, but that's about the product--pretty much anyone with an MBA could make money hand over fist leading the NFL.

The funny thing is that Rice has outright said he won't deal with anyone but Ozzie as he is the only one (according to him) being truthful.

It makes sense to me. Of the people who shut Harbaugh down on releasing him, everyone but Ozzie is trying to claim Ray Rice lied and misled them - straight up to Goodell. When we know thats not the case. They knew the whole story from the very beginning.
This is quickly turning from a story about a pos knocking his fiance out, to one about how his various employers tried to sweep it under the carpet.

Which is amazing to me considering he is a corpse of a rb compared to 3 years ago anyway

Agreed he's a corpse now, but he's still a very recognized player and Goodell's obsessed with the league's image. Goodell (surprise!) miscalculated that he could, through denial, claiming ignorance, etc. think this would all go away. You can bet he never thought he'd have to deal with the elevator tape being seen by the public, the voice mail that the league had the tape months ago, the items detailed in the OTL report, etc.

I'm just surprised the league didn't get together and handle this properly from the outset. Instead, they let Goodell handle it, and, well, we see how that's turned out.

Ugggggghhhh.....the only guy who showed ANY common sense in this whole thing is now doubling down on the company line...

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...harbaugh-i-did-not-recommend-cutting-ray-rice

The Baltimore Ravens on Monday released a statement responding to ESPN.com's "Outside the Lines" feature on the Ray Rice situation.

Promising to be "open, candid and transparent with our fans, sponsors, ticket holders, and the general public," the team rejected the article's claim that coach John Harbaugh urged the Ravens to release Rice soon after seeing footage of the running back's February arrest on assault charges.

"... The images (on the first videotape) horrified Ravens coach John Harbaugh, according to four sources inside and outside the organization," ESPN.com reported. "The Super Bowl-winning coach urged his bosses to release Rice immediately, especially if the team had evidence Rice had thrown a punch. ... But Harbaugh's recommendation to cut the six-year veteran running back was quickly rejected by Ravens management: owner (Steve) Bisciotti, team president (Dick) Cass and GM (Ozzie) Newsome."

Harbaugh says that isn't so:

"I did not recommend cutting Ray Rice from the team after seeing the first videotape," Harbaugh said in the statement. "I was very disturbed by that tape, and I told people that the facts should determine the consequences. When I saw the second videotape, I immediately felt that we needed to release Ray."
