Not really a grammar question, per se, but what exactly is the difference between "sooner rather than later", and "soon"? In my opinion, it is better rather than worse to avoid the former.

And when did half the population unlearn how to spell the word "lose"?

Is it "1990s" or "1990's"?

Form "1099s" or "1099's"?

Everything I am reading is telling me to omit the apostrophe, but I could have sworn that I was taught to use one.
