Rutgers at tOSU, November 7th, 7 pm on BTN

First game I could record on Sling... might just watch the first half again. Even if we got vanilla and conservative, there's no excuse for what happened on defense. The good news is that the B1G is so weak that we might have enough time to figure it out, but we need a real wakeup call soon if tonight wasn't it. The offense can score at will is the only comforting thought, but not quite a guarantee considering we inexplicably cannot run the ball. We definitely miss Dobbins.

POSTGAME PRESSER BULLETS: RYAN DAY, JUSTIN FIELDS, JUSTIN HILLIARD, CHRIS OLAVE, TUF BORLAND EVALUATE OHIO STATE'S 49-27 WIN VERSUS RUTGERS

  • “It is a tale of two halves. Really proud of the way our guys came out and played.” Says they “didn’t play very great” in the second half. Notes special teams and penalties as areas of concern in the game.
  • “We should have really dominated in the first five or six minutes of the second half.” That didn't happen, so the backups never entered.
  • Day says without any juice in the stadium, this team has to “bring our own energy” better in the second half of blowouts. “We’ll focus on that this week.”
  • “I thought in the first half, it was pretty good. I thought we were tackling well and running to the ball.” Notes there were some missed tackles in the second half.
  • When he knew Fields would be a generational talent: “Pretty early on. I knew he had the potential to be.”
  • “Just disappointed about the second half.”
  • Says about the last throw to Olave, “(Fields) made it look like a 12-yard out.”
  • If he’s ever seen this many trick plays: “No. Especially the onside kicks. It was like a New York sidewalk. They were going back and forth, back and forth.”
  • He says they knew Greg Schiano would be aggressive. “We didn’t quite know it was going to be all of those things.”
  • “We’re not making excuses at all.” Says they need to clean up the penalties and other errors.
  • On defending the trick plays: “I thought we did a great job.” Says he felt his team was prepared for what happened. “We can’t always be worried about that. We need to be aggressive.” He points to the fake punt that Ohio State successfully employed.
  • Day says he wants to go back to the film and figure out what happened. “I think if we practice better, we’ll finish better.”
  • “It’s a strange season. It was a strange week. There’s so many things at play.” Says they’re going to do what they can to stay healthy and go beat Maryland.

Hey, the 2nd half wasn't great, but it was still a "W":

Someone said Ryan Day seemed pissed... but I didn’t get that at all. Pretty sure he was thrilled with the game. Comfortable W and Greg didn’t get completely embarrassed. Win/win. I mean, I don’t have my tin foil hat on, but if you ask me if the dogs were called off a bit, I have a few smirks to offer.

3-0. Maryland on deck.

My thoughts. This was a wake up call for a team in a letdown week after Penn State. Both lines will not be happy with their performance. Schiano got his boys up. If they are sticking with Teague in the backfield, they need to complement him.
We've had about 6 quarters so far this year of wake up calls. The team needs to get the message that we weren't even supposed to play this year and that teams like Liberty can beat teams like Rutgers.

I realize we are better than everyone in the big ten but there has to be improvement next week or we will need 50+ to win.

Didn’t we all go into the season expecting a pretty big drop off at DB? So I guess I’m not sure why it’s a surprise that there’s a pretty big drop off at DB. I thought that a Wade and Banks were okay enough last night.....could have been better, but not terrible. Proctor, Hooker, Williamson, Johnson were not good.

Allowing that the DB play overall has not been very good, I am far more concerned about the OL and even DL. The DLs lack of pressure was very surprising to me.

Its going to be interesting to see who graded as champions yesterday.
