Several coaches I spoke to on the day had the same reaction I did when I saw Anderson Russell of Marist, "I didn't know he was that big!". Russell checked in at 6-0 and 200 pounds, and he looked solid in drills all day. He caught the ball well out of the backfield. With three seniors vacating the State Champion's backfield, Russell is going to have a chance to get a lot of carries this year.

• Marist tailback Anderson Russell entered preseason practice with only one offer (Duke), but could end up with more than any other player in the area by season's end. College scouts are waiting to see Russell's production and durability over the course of a season as Marist's No. 1 offensive option.

Russell's team is off to a 4-1 start. Ohio State is one of the schools Anderson has been in contact with this month. Georgia Tech, Duke and the Buckeyes are his favorites. He has been talking with Dick Tressel and Mel Tucker and they have talked to him about possibly playing both ways.

"Two of my teammates last year Matt Rumsey and Chris Davis signed with Duke and they have been talking to me about Duke a lot lately. The fact that they are there and I would know someone is appealing. I think it is always appealing to be able to go and play with your former teammates again, but I have to make the decision that is best for me."

This could be a case where the kid would rather walk into major playing time as a freshman than "pay his dues" at OSU where he has to compete with 5 other h.s. all americans, a la Izzy Bauta last year.

First of all, Irizarry never complained about not playing...that was the only thing good about the kid, aside from his natural talent. Second, re-read Russell's quote, where he says, "...it is always appealing to be able to go and play with your former teammates again, but I have to make the decision that is best for me." That tells me that he's willing to go somewhere else (OSU in this case) rather than play along with his former high school teammates at a school where he would be far more likely to see the field earlier.

Izzy Bauta was an O-line recruit last year from New York that chose to go to Duke even though he had a scholarship offer from Ohio State. I think the comparison was a good one. I guarantee both Bauta and Russell would see the field earlier at Duke than they would at Ohio State and for some kids that's important. It remains to be seen if Russell feels the same way Bauta did.

Russell will be making an unofficial visit to Columbus this weekend. He said once Ohio State started recruiting him they became his dream school. The Buckeyes are his leader and he loves the tradition at Ohio State, the facilities and Coach Tressel.

I really hope we are recruiting him as a safety, although we already dropped Myers-White from the board for whatever reason, whether it was his (lack of) performance this year or beacuse we are in pretty good shape at the safety spot. Hopefully, offers like this one are not indicative of us losing ground with either Stewart, Wells, or (I still hope) Ringer...

Either way, this kid sounds like a player, plus he would be another player on the roster from Georgia (a decent recruiting state) to go along with Brandon Mitchell...

Hes a solid student as well which means alot to me as a fan because I know hes has work ethic. I don't care about any damn stars or what the "gurus" say about this kid. What the coaches say is all I need to know. I hope this young man commits this weekend. Anderson will be impressed with OSU i'm sure.

Russell got an offer a few weeks ago, before Stewert was offered and showed osu interest, and before gwaltney scheduled his official to osu. i dont think it is indicative of other rb's at this point. now if osu strikes out on some rb's he may be shifted over from safety, but the fact that amw had his offer pulled and russell was offered as a safety around the same time is telling.

also, 6' 200 already? That would be a pretty mean mack truck in the secondary and on special teams.
