Browns sign two, waive one

By Sports Network

- The Sports Network

The Cleveland Browns on Sunday signed defensive backs Brandon Mitchell and Travis Key and waived defensive back Steve Cargile.
Mitchell, a former Ohio State product, comes to Cleveland after spending last year on the Houston Texans practice squad. He appeared in 45 games as a safety with the Buckeyes and had a pair of interceptions and 51 tackles in his senior season.

Trying to make the grade in secondary OSU standout Mitchell puts master's degree on hold for Cleveland

BEREA: Brandon Mitchell was updating his resume and wondering whether it was time to enroll in the two courses he needs to complete his master's degree in communications.
Then the former Ohio State safety's telephone rang.
He tried out for the Browns on Saturday and was signed that night, along with former Michigan State defensive back Travis Key, an undrafted rookie.
They were on the field Sunday, replacing safeties Gary Baxter and Steve Cargile after Baxter's contract was terminated and Cargile was waived. The Browns have only two other backups behind starting safeties Sean Jones and Brodney Pool, nickel back Mike Adams and special teams standout Nick Sorensen.
''I'm glad to be back in Ohio,'' Mitchell said.
A 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, Mitchell played in 45 games and started 20 at OSU, including all 12 his senior year in 2006, when he was a second-team all-Big Ten selection. Undrafted, he was signed by the Houston Texans last May and spent all season on the practice squad. He was released July 31.
Browns coach Romeo Crennel didn't offer a glowing endorsement of Mitchell or Key, who is listed at 5-10, 185.
''One guy has good size, and the other guy doesn't have as much size but he was a playmaker in college,'' Crennel said. ''So we are going to take a look at them and see how they might help us.''

Ex-Buckeye signed for secondary

By Sean McClelland | Monday, August 11, 2008, 11:58 AM
If either of the defensive backs acquired over the weekend makes an impact this season, I?d bet on Brandon Mitchell, the former Ohio State player.
Browns defensive coordinator Mel Tucker coached him at OSU and Mitchell credits him for knowing how to get the best out of him. Now, whether that ?best? is good enough to help in some way, we?ll see.
No question about it, the Browns are scrambling for backup help, even more now that they had to release Gary Baxter.
Understandably alarmed (panicked?) over how poorly some of their non-starters played in Thursday?s 24-20 preseason-opening loss to the New York Jets, the Browns waived Steve Cargile on Sunday while signing Mitchell and Travis Key, who played at Michigan State.
This is Mitchell?s second year in the league. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder went undrafted in 2007 and spent last season on the Houston Texans? practice squad. This after playing in 45 games at safety for the Buckeyes.

In addition, Strickland appointed Brandon Mitchell, a former Buckeye football player and student in the Moritz College of Law, to serve as a student member of the OSU trustees.

Mitchell previously served as a program coordinator for the YMCA of Greater Houston and played for the Houston Texans of the National Football League from 2007-08. He was a four-year letterman for the Ohio State football team and served as vice president of the minority student athlete group, Majority of One, during his undergraduate career. He received a bachelor?s degree from the Ohio State in 2005.

Where are they now? An update on some of the Ohio State starters from the 2006 OSU-Michigan game.

Safety Brandon Mitchell

The Buckeyes' fourth-leading tackler and a second-team All-Big Ten pick during his senior season in 2006 who had four stops against the Wolverines, Mitchell will leave a lasting legacy on his school for nothing related to the 2006 season. A third-year law student at Ohio State, Mitchell is serving a two-year term as the professional student representative on the OSU Board of Trustees. He has been dealing with issues throughout the university, but in a tumultuous year for the football program, he has served as a guide for the board.

Mitchell returns an interception for a touchdown on Nov. 11, 2006, at Northwestern.

"I was looking around the table at all these exceptional people and figuring out where I would fit," Mitchell said. "But as the issues came up in athletics, I became kind of an expert on the board. I was the only one who had boots on the ground, who understood the football process and how things had been in the past. Obviously, the situation has been unfortunate, but it's given me a completely different perspective on college athletics, and to see the other side of things has been enlightening."

Mitchell already had made his mark during his undergrad career as the one student on the hiring committee that brought in Athletic Director Gene Smith. That inspired him to seek the board position.

"I wanted to impact the community and pay my debt," Mitchell, a Georgia native, said. "I wanted to serve the university and the city and the state I love."

He will now stay in Columbus after graduation, working in the general counsel's office for Nationwide Insurance. His board position runs out in May. But don't be surprised if you hear from Mitchell again in the years ahead.
