S/C Coach Mickey Marotti (Official Thread)

The thing that I remember about those national title teams was that they played as hard, strong, and fast at the end of the season as they did at the beginning. They were just as terrifying all throughout.

That'll be nice.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - There is one person Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer trusts in the critical area of strength and conditioning training and overseeing sports performance, and he is an individual Meyer has worked with or hired three times previously: Mickey Marotti. Make that worked with or hired four times, as today Meyer named Marotti, formerly the director of sports performance at the University of Florida, as assistant athletic director for football sports performance at The Ohio State University.

Called a "master" of motivation and mental preparation by Meyer when the two were paired at Florida, Marotti will take over the strength and conditioning program of the team Jan. 2 when the Buckeyes return from the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl.

"There are times in the year when the strength staff has more contact with the team than the coaching staff," Meyer said, "and I have complete trust in Mickey Marotti's abilities to prepare our student-athletes to be the strongest, fastest and mentally toughest football players they can be."

Marotti and Meyer first met when the two were graduate assistants at Ohio State, in 1987. Marotti, who also worked as Grove City High School's strength coach that year, earned a master's of arts degree in strength and conditioning from Ohio State before moving on to the University of West Virginia to be a strength assistant. He graduated from WVU with a master's of science degree in sports medicine.

From there he went on to the University of Cincinnati, where he spent seven seasons (1990-97) as head strength and conditioning coach for UC's 20-sport program. He also worked in the areas of diet analysis and planning and assisted in student-athlete rehabilitation from injuries.

Midway through Meyer's five-year run as an assistant coach at Notre Dame, Marotti had the opportunity to work with him again when he was named Notre Dame's director of strength and conditioning in 1998. He spent seven seasons in South Bend, coordinating all aspects of the strength and conditioning program for the 26-sport department, including developing a year-round program for the football team, coordinating camps, clinics and special events, and developing policies and regulations.

Looks like 2 of the 4 assistant strength positions are filled, right?

Kenny Parker (Murray State/Florida)
Rick Court (San Diego State/Toledo/Bowling Green)

I seen it mentioned that Anthony Schlegel will be retained. He held the title of Asst. Strength and Conditioning Coach last season. Nothing has been confirmed yet.

Marotti Introducing Buckeyes to ?Black January??
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? In the wee hours of Tuesday morning, with the sun still making its way towards the horizon, Ohio State football players stood face to face with the man who will make their lives miserable for the next month.

His face will become all too familiar to the Buckeyes, who began their annual winter conditioning this week under anything but usual circumstances.

That?s because Mickey Marotti is anything but usual.

Ohio State?s new strength and conditioning coach even has an unusual title - assistant athletic director for football sports performance - under first-year head coach Urban Meyer.

?He is the most important hire in an athletic department,? said Meyer, who managed to bring Marotti with him from Florida.

?I don?t want to say that I couldn?t do this job without him, but it would be hard.?

From the end of bowl season to the start of spring practice, no one, not even Meyer and his nine assistant coaches, will spend more time around Ohio State?s players than Marotti.

That is not good news for any OSU players who were planning to enjoy the off-season.

Yep, he's staying on, as well as Jeff Uhlenhake.

Marotti's staff is complete:

Jeff Svoboda @JeffSvoboda Close
Jeff Uhlenhake & Anthony Schlegel will stay on the strength/conditioning staff under Mickey Marotti. Also hiring Rick Court & Kenny Parker.
