Agree he had a great game Saturday. Noticed him in run support more then pass coverage (though I think he had one impressive break up in the game on a deep pass....I think that was him?)

COLUMBUS ? Ohio State safety C.J. Barnett made an inspiring comeback from surgery for a torn knee ligament last season, leading the Buckeyes in tackles. But individual accomplishments feel a little hollow when your team is floundering so badly.

After a Rose Bowl victory in 2009 and a Sugar Bowl win in 2010 (since vacated), OSU tumbled to a 6-7 record ? its first losing mark since 1988. And Barnett said the slide from the usual standards was more than just a wake-up call for the players. It was a frying pan to the face.

?When you go to a school like this, you expect to do great things and win,? said the fourth-year junior from Northmont. ?You kind of get a sense of entitlement, that you?re entitled to go out there and win games and have great bowls like that.

?That year brought us to reality. You?ve got to work for what you want.?

3. S C.J. Barnett (6-0, 200)*
One of the better underclassmen safeties in the nation, Barnett is an instinctive player with some cornerback skills. He quickly became one of the leaders of the Ohio State secondary last season in his first year as a starter, leading the team in tackles. Regarded as a four-star cornerback recruit, Barnett committed to the Buckeyes as a junior in high school and recorded a handful of tackles on special teams as a true freshman in Columbus. He became a starter in 2010, but a knee injury sidelined him for the season, taking a medical redshirt. Barnett returned in 2011 and regained his free safety job (13 starts), finishing with a team-best 75 tackles and two interceptions. His disciplined and consistent performance last season was one of the few bright spots on a defense that finished near the bottom of the Big Ten. Barnett is aggressive in run support and trusts his eyes, diagnosing the action and putting himself in position to succeed. He has an advanced understanding of the game with top-shelf instincts and feel for the position, but looks a bit stiff in man coverage and lacks elite footwork. Barnett has an overachieving attitude and has developed into an extra coach on the field with Meyer describing him as "a guy who just doesn't accept being average." He suffered a serious knee injury in September 2010 that required surgery so durability is a question mark that will have to be monitored. The list of former Buckeyes defensive backs currently in the NFL is an extensive one, including Malcolm Jenkins, Nate Clements, Antoine Winfield, Chris Gamble, Donte Whitner and Kurt Coleman. And with two years of eligibility left at Ohio State, Barnett could be next.

In the opening episode Tuesday of ?ESPN?s All Access: Ohio State Training Days,? OSU coach Urban Meyer stopped C.J. Barnett on the practice field as the junior safety was running by and said: ?I like coaching you. Glad you?re a Buckeye, bro.?

Meyer isn?t one to toss around compliments in an insincere way. The players who aren?t endearing themselves to him know exactly where they stand, too.

But Barnett, a two-year starter from Northmont High School, has been lauded by the coaching staff as a player others on the team should emulate.

?Great kid,? co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell said. ?He?s one of the hardest working players out there. When you try to evaluate what are the top three things in a kid?s life, football is probably going to be right up there with his family and, hopefully, his faith.

?It?s not hard to tell who puts a foot on the pedal and how they go about their business. He?s got the ability. Now, is he Chris Gamble (a two-way starter in 2002-03)? No. But let?s be realistic. Do you have to be? No. There?s a fine line. Everybody is in that same ability range. It comes down to the passion to do the intangible things. He does them.?
