S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

What is remarkable about this team is that we have the #1 rated CB prospect in the country for both 2003 and 2004 - and neither is playing CB. (so much for recruiting services)

Perhaps the #3 rated prospect from 2005 can do it.

The best CBs in HS are generally just phenomenal athletes-Ginn, Whitner-who might or might not have the hips, savvy, etc. to play CB in college. They can rely on their speed to make plays in HS that won't be able to get away with in college. That said, I remember Kelton Lindsay getting juked out of his socks by way slower, less physically talented receivers in HS. The coaching staff switched him to safety, even though he wasn't a great hitter, so he could simply break on the ball all the time and make plays. For as much hype as Ginn had coming in here as a CB, I can't remember much discussion of his savvy/smarts as a DB in HS-not physical skills.

Well, my take on Whitner moving back to Safety tells me that Whitner is to valuable at safety or is best suited at safety. It also means that the staff likes what they see from Welch and have a good feeling about Ty Everett or maybe Tress will have to throw O'Neal in the fire (if he qualifys) or just quite possibly they may need to throw Tedd Ginn over there.

Everett Replacing Whitner at CB

Now that Whitner is going back to his safety position, it appears that Tyler Everett will be taking snaps at CB (once cleared for full-contact). Coach Paul Haynes was quoted in the Dispatch today, "Hes just a safety (Whitner). The guy were going to try out there is Tyler Everett." I think this could be a pretty good idea. That would be scary for offenses to defend this year - Youboty, EJ Underwood, Everett and our safeties.

They also said that Sirjo Welch (S) and Mike Roberts (CB) will be taking snaps in the CB position during full contact practices - Hmmm...this spring could be pretty interesting with all the different positions were trying our kids out at.

Didn't realize this was a possible issue... how real is this?
According to Steve H., JamO, Amos, and Lenix are borderline right now...Lenix is basically waiting for tOSU admission while the other two do not have a reported test score that he knows of....

How can they not have a reported test score?
Are they just still taking/re-taking their SATs and ACTs??
It would really, really suck if all 3 of them don't qualify.

Lenix has a 3.4 and a 17 ACT so he sounds like he's fine...
The other two I think have 3.0's but no test scores, and there didn't seem to be much more info than that

Despite the GPA, it seems to me that a 17 ACT would be a bit low for the current admissions standards...

The last frosh class averaged just over 25, after all...

I read Helwagen's comments and they were heavily qualified. He said he had not seen Amos and O'Neal's test scores, not that they weren't reported... as a result he said they along with Lenix MAY be three to watch. He also said that with a 17 Lenix should be fine.

I see now that some of this is already posted.

For "Normal" students, the average does, if only so much as that the higher the average, the higher the cutoff will be.

For football players, I would hope the same holds true... but I'm sure some allowances are made (ie Tress getting 2 questionables a year, or whatever the rule is...)

Having said that, I know that our coaching staff puts a premium on good students, as well as excellent athletes. I was in no way knocking Lenix. Just saying that 17 is on the low end for OSU's student body. He's got a good GPA, I guess I would just have expected a better ACT. If 17's good enough, then it's good enough.

I saw an interesting quote from AJ Hawk in the Dispatch -
"Even guys like Ashton (Youboty) and Sirjo Welch, they hit you at corner.
Not only is Welch playing corner in spring practice he is turning head. One funny thing to note is that it is still Sirjo Welch but Hawk is on a first name basis with every other player mentioned.

In a solid article by Gary Housteau, Donte discusses his film preparations that have improved his play, the role of Ted Ginn Sr. in all of the Glenville players' lives, and the possibility of leaving for the NFL after this year. Great read about a kid who has listened to the excellent advice he has received from a number of good people.
