Kurt Coleman: Kurt Coleman's (sternum) X-rays negative
Kurt Coleman - DB - PHI - Dec. 3

Eagles S Kurt Coleman was forced from Philadelphia's Week 13 loss to the Cowboys with a bruised sternum, but X-rays came back negative.
He'll undergo an MRI on Monday. Coleman took a hard fall in the fourth quarter, and remained down for several moments before being escorted to the locker room. He had the looks of a player who will be out for Week 14, which would be unwelcome news for Philly's horrendous secondary. Dec. 3 -

He looked to be in a lot of pain coming off the field last night. For those that didn't see the play, Kurt tackled Jason Witten last night on his way to the end zone. They were both running full speed in the open field and Kurt hit him around the waste to take him down just short of the goal line. It didn't look like a huge collision but Kurt looked like he was reluctant to move his upper body coming off the field. Hope he recovers quickly.

Coleman ailing

The Eagles said safety Kurt Coleman suffered a cartilage bruise in the sternum and rib area. Reid labeled him day-to-day. Coleman's availability could help determine whether Reid makes changes in the Eagles' struggling secondary.

"I'm looking closely at that, making sure we have the right people in there to do a better job these last four games," Reid said.

When asked specifically about safety David Sims and cornerback Curtis Marsh as options on Sunday, Reid did not sound enthused.

"I'm in the position where I've got to make that judgment, and I've got to weigh it out, who I think puts us in a better position," Reid said Sunday. "I'm looking at those things. I made the decision to play the guys who have played because I think they're the best ones to play right now."

Eagles' Kurt Coleman knows Redskins' rookie QB Kirk Cousins can?t be overlooked
Published: Tuesday, December 18, 2012

PHILADELPHIA ? Whether Kurt Coleman sits or plays this week, the Eagles can access his personal in-depth scouting report on Kirk Cousins.

Coleman, the Ohio State product, has a history with Michigan State University alum Cousins.

In his NFL starting debut last week, Cousins threw for 329 yards and two touchdowns to spark the Washington Redskins to a 38-21 win at Cleveland.

With Robert Griffin III nursing a sprained knee, the Eagles have to be prepared for two quarterbacks.

Coleman, scratched for the second straight week in favor of safety Colt Anderson, says there?s only one way to look at his situation. And that?s to be the best teammate he can, in any way he can.

?He?s a good passer. He?s a good passing QB,? Coleman said. ?I don?t know what the different scheme is right now with him being in there, but he can throw the ball. And if I remember correctly, at one point in his senior season he was up there for top QB in the country. So he?s up there as one of the really good QBs that can play this game.?

Coleman started the first 12 games at safety this season. He started 10 of the last 11 in 2011, the Eagles winning the last four games. Aggregate the Eagles? record with Coleman starting this season and last, and it?s understandable why they?re turning over every rock to improve. The Eagles are just 10-15 with Coleman starting at safety.

'Vocal' Coleman earns Bowles' praise, if nobody else's

Kurt Coleman hasn?t heard very many people sing his praises, especially outside the NovaCare Complex.

But the opinion that matters most to Coleman came Thursday from defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, who singled out the third-year safety?s leadership and lunch-pail mentality to explain the decision to start Coleman over Nate Allen for Sunday?s game against the Redskins.

?Kurt, right now, is more vocal. And we talked to Nate. Nate needs to be a little bit more vocal, a little bit more decisive and at the time we think Kurt is the best way to go,? Bowles said. ?Colt [Anderson] has been playing well and really didn?t want to sit Kurt down. It was a tough choice. Nate is going to play but Kurt going into the game, probably from an experience factor and knowledge factor, is just a little bit ahead of him.?

Coleman, who missed the past two games with a sternum injury, will team with Anderson to comprise the starting safety tandem in the home finale. Allen, a second-round pick who has struggled in his third season, could rotate in.

?It?s nice to know the coaches respect me and how I play the game and what I can bring to the table,? Coleman said. ?This team?s a family. I would have fully understood if they wanted to keep Nate and Colt in there. Colt has definitely played well the past two games and earned a spot and I?m about winning, so whatever it takes. As far as what [Bowles] said about me, it?s nice to know, but I?ve got to continue to get better and help this team as much as possible.?

Coleman slides back into safety spot
Missed two games with rib injury

PHILADELPHIA ? Eagles coach Andy Reid could have taken the easy way out.

After all, Nate Allen was a second-round draft pick in 2010 and had started since the first game of his rookie season. No one would have batted an eye if Reid kept him as a starter at safety over Kurt Coleman, a seventh-round pick, or Colt Anderson, an undrafted free agent signed two years ago off Minnesota?s practice squad.

But Reid has already benched offensive lineman Danny Watkins, the Eagles? first-round pick in 2011, saying Friday that the offensive line has played well as a unit since Watkins went out with a sprained ankle in October.

?With (the offensive line), you want all five of them dancing the same dance,? Reid said. ?And if somebody steps in and is doing a pretty good job with it, and it works, then you go with it.?

Reid said it?s the same way in the secondary. Anderson has played well in place of Coleman, who had missed the last two games with a rib injury. Coleman is healthy now, but Allen is the one going to the bench because Reid said Coleman ?is a little more vocal.?

?They?re good football players and they?ve worked hard at their profession,? Reid said about Coleman and Anderson. ?When given an opportunity to make plays, they?ve made some plays, so they deserve that opportunity to be in there.?

Safety: The Birds grabbed one in what was a strong group of them in the draft, picking Earl Wolff in the fifth round, who was North Carolina State?s leading tackler last year and has the ability to play the deep middle of the field or up in the box. He will play and possibly play a lot, particularly when other teams get into the red zone and the Birds go with three safeties.

There are six safeties on the roster, and the team likely won?t keep that many.

So who stays and goes between Wolff, incumbents Nate Allen, Kurt Coleman and Colt Anderson, and free-agent signings Patrick Chung and Kenny Phillips?

Kelly said that special teams will go a long way in deciding these jobs. And nobody does those better than Anderson.

Kurt Coleman on the Eagles new defense: "The offense doesn't know where we are coming from"
By Mike Kaye on May 21 2013

In the first few weeks of the Eagles offseason program, the team's offense has been the main topic of discussion. With players hitting the field without pads, the offensive playmakers are able to shine without the threat of a hit, but Eagles safety Kurt Coleman believes the the team's new defense could be the unit that turns heads on gameday.

Coleman spoke to reporters on Monday after practice, and said the defense will be a force to be reckoned with."I like this defense. The offense doesn't know where we are coming from," said Coleman with a certainty. "We're giving the same look and bringing different people every single time."

The fourth-year defensive back knows that he and the rest of the Andy Reid holdovers have a lot to prove to the new coaching staff. He says the unit needs to finish games and play to their talent level. "The whole defense, we did not play up to our potential (last year)," said the Ohio State alum. "We'd make plays then give up plays (later). We weren't always on the same page, so I am not going to make excuses."

A 2010 seventh-round pick, Coleman has started 29 of the 44 games he has played in since entering the league. While he has been able to put up a decent stat line over the last three seasons (207 tackles, 11 pass deflections, seven interceptions and two forced fumbles), his performance in games has drawn criticism from Eagles fans due to his inconsistencies. Coleman admits he needs to improve. "You gotta be able to run, you gotta tackle, you gotta make plays when (the ball) comes your way," said Coleman. "I believe that no matter what you're doing, you have to play football."

Still, Coleman knows 2013 will be a big indicator of his future in the league. He thinks Billy Davis's scheme will help him improve both his performance and his paycheck. "I gotta be able to work on every single part of my game and this (new defense) is going to get me paid, and get me some interceptions," said Coleman with a smile.

In order for Coleman's premonitions to come true, he will have make the team, which has a crowded safety unit. Either way, it sounds like he is coming into the competition with the right mindset.

Eagles' Coleman able to keep football in perspective

Philadelphia Eagles' safety, Kurt Coleman celebrates after stopping Detroit Lions' return man, Stefan Logan for a short gain in the fourth quarter at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Sunday. The Eagles lost in overtime 23-26.

Before Kurt Coleman became a safety for the Eagles, there was 2006.

It was the year he nearly quit playing football after tackling a friend and teammate during spring drills of his freshman season at Ohio State. It was a hit so devastating that it left Tyson Gentry paralyzed.

It was the year he nearly lost his father. Ron Coleman was diagnosed with stage 2 male breast cancer close to Thanksgiving.

Kurt Coleman learned a lot that year, particularly perspective. Mostly, it strengthened him spiritually.

?Football is a platform for me to serve a greater purpose,? he said. ?I know God has given me talent and ability to do amazing things, and it?s not just play football.

?I love playing football. I feel I?m very good at it. I can get better, but I know I can do a lot more outside the realm of the gridiron.?

The most bitter of Eagles fans would say it is time for Coleman to begin living outside the realm of the football field, unhappy that he hasn?t become the next Brian Dawkins.

It is too convenient to forget that Coleman was the team?s second-leading tackler last year with 105 of them, and that despite missing two games with a chest contusion.

It is too easy to forget that Coleman was a seventh-round draft pick yet has made 29 career starts, collected 229 tackles and seven interceptions, including a three-pick performance two seasons ago that made him the first Eagle since 1966 to make three interceptions in a game.

Kurt Coleman: The good news for Coleman is that he has no where to go but up, as last year's starting safety ran with the third team for the majority of the day. Coleman was clear when he arrived to camp on Thursday that he planned to compete for a starting job, saying that he has shown he can "make plays."

That statement was met by some mockery from fans, but Coleman was the only defender to make a big play on Friday, taking a tipped pass back to the house for a touchdown during 11 on 11s.

It was the kind of play Coleman has made throughout his career, finding himself in the right place at the right time. Still, there were other opportunities throughout the day for other players to do the same thing, and they didn't. Coleman was also a vocal leader on defender, answering the questions rookies- and even some players above him- had on the sideline.

Coleman's spot on the roster is far from secured, but coaches had to be impressed with him on Friday.
