S Nate Salley (official thread)

Getting guys back
Submitted by Darin on Tue, 2007-08-14 17:23.
The Panthers got several key pieces back on the practice field Tuesday, getting them closer to a full team out there.

S Nate Salley, RB DeAngelo Williams, WR Dwayne Jarrett and RB Alex Haynes were back to practice after missing time with various injuries.

Salley hasn't reclaimed his starting job yet, but it probably won't be much longer until he works with the first team in place of Deke Cooper.

Injury Cost Nate Salley Starting Job

POSTED: 6:10 pm EDT August 15, 2007
UPDATED: 6:14 pm EDT August 15, 2007

SPARTANBURG, S.C -- Nate Salley's injury cost him his job with the starters.

Salley, who missed two weeks of practice with a sore knee, was back on the field this week, but working with the second team behind starting safeties Chris Harris and Deke Cooper.

"It's very frustrating," Salley said. "But I'm going to keep working and things will work out in the end."

Salley, who was penciled in to start at the beginning of camp after playing only on special teams last year, isn't giving up hope of getting back into the starting lineup.

"I feel like I still have a pretty good shot," Salley said. "I hope that all the things I did in minicamp and summer school and down here before I got hurt don't go down the drain."

Still seeking answers at safety

Harris is definitely a concern. But maybe the bigger concern should be at free safety, a position where the ability to play the deep ball is even more important. Deke Cooper has worked there in the first three preseason games and hasn?t looked all that good. Don?t be surprised if Nate Salley gets a start there in the preseason finale Thursday.

And don?t be surprised if the Panthers take a long, hard look for safety help on the waiver wire as other teams make cuts in the next week or so.

Panthers' Salley heading to injured reserve
STAN OLSON

Carolina Panthers safety Nate Salley, bothered by a knee ligament problem since the middle of training camp, is expected to be placed on injured reserve by the team this afternoon to make room on the roster for guard Jeremy Bridges.

Salley had expected to contend for a starting spot in the secondary, but he could not recover from the injury.

Salley: I might have rushed my recovery

If you wonder why safety Nate Salley?s knee sprain seemed endless before he was placed on injured reserve earlier this week, it?s because it was actually more than that. He has a badly pulled or possibly torn posterior cruciate ligament (PCL), and although it felt better at times, it never progressed beyond a certain point. He stopped in the locker room Thursday and spoke about it.

"We thought I could get back a little sooner; it was feeling pretty good," he said. "I think I might have rushed it a little bit. It got set back twice and then I end up here."

Salley, projected as a starter at the beginning of training camp as he began his second year with the team, had to sit and watch as the Panthers brought three more safeties in.

Surgery hasn?t been ruled out, but he said he plans to give it a month or so more to see if the knee gets better through rehabilitation.

"Surgery is like a last resort type of deal," he said. "Hopefully I won?t have to go that route."

Should surgery be necessary, Salley said he would be ready for next season

"We have plenty of time," he said..

Restricted free agents tendered

With the NFL's free agency signing period set to begin on Friday, the Panthers have tendered contracts to their three restricted free agents, offensive lineman Geoff Hangartner, guard Evan Mathis and linebacker Adam Seward. Carolina has also tendered contracts to its two exclusive rights free agents, linebacker Brandon Jamison and safety Nate Salley, who in effect remain tied to the team.

Nate has been hurt again in training camp...

This might have helped Nate Salley if he wasn?t hurt himself. Nate Salley is a prime example of how an untimely injury can cost you everything. He was projected to be the starter at FS last training camp but injured his leg which cost him the entire season. Now he?s battling for a roster spot at strong safety I believe but still can?t seem to stay on the field. I?m starting to wonder if he may be earning the dreaded ?injury-prone? label.

A second chance

He was drafted in the fourth round in 2006, then cut before training camp and brought back after someone else got hurt. He missed the following year because of injury, but now safety Nate Salley is a backup and special-teamer with a shot at a Super Bowl ring with the Carolina Panthers.

"I wouldn't mind that," Salley said.

After thinking about what would come next after football, he's grateful he could restart his career in the game he said he'd play for free.

Three years ago, he was playing for free, and he hasn't forgotten that.

"I check them out any chance I get," Salley said of the Buckeyes. "I got guys [on the Panthers] who like to hate on us. So I always talk a little trash and have some fun."

A win on Monday -- like the one three years ago, the last time the Buckeyes finished the season with a victory -- would help his cause.

Anderson, Salley sign RFA tenders
Andrew Mason

CHARLOTTE -- Linebacker James Anderson and safety Nate Salley signed their restricted free agent tenders on Monday, ensuring their return to the Panthers for the upcoming season.

They join tight end Jeff King -- another restricted free agent and fourth-year veteran -- who signed his tender earlier in the offseason. The trio represents the entire complement of restricted free agents for the Panthers this year.

Both Salley and Anderson were key contributors on special teams last year, with Salley finishing fifth on the Panthers with eight stops on kickoff and punt coverage last year. He played in all 16 games after returning from a knee injury that scuttled his 2007 campaign.
