IRVING ? The Pittsburgh Steelers made an impression on Will Allen when he joined them three years ago.

Come training camp, he hopes he make the same impression on the Dallas Cowboys, his new team.

?The first thing Ryan Clark and Troy Polamalu and Ike Taylor and those guys said to me when I walked into the defensive back room, was if you don?t stick your face in the thing, you can?t be on this defense,? he said. ?If you aren?t ready to hit ? we don?t care about interceptions ? if you aren?t ready to hit, we don?t need you.

?That?s a mentality. If you aren?t trying to hit, you can forget about it.?

So that?s the mentality Allen, signed as a free agent to bring veteran experience at safety for the Cowboys, hopes to get across in July when the Cowboys start practices in training camp in Oxnard, Calif.

He didn?t get a chance to do any hitting in the off-season practices, first because he was hurt part of the time, and second, because it is non-contact work.

But, speaking to reporters during the minicamp at Valley Ranch this month, he said players such as linebacker Sean Lee and safety Barry Church make him think the Cowboys can be a strong-hitting defense.

?Those Pittsburgh guys are mean on the field ... to everybody,? Allen said. ?It?s not just taboo. It?s not something you just say. You really believe it. You really mean it. It?s your mindset because everybody?s accountable to each other. And hopefully we can build that same accountability here on the back end, everybody from Brandon Carr to Mo Claiborne.

?I don?t care how you bring them down, but we?re going to hit. We?re going to let these receivers know we mean business. I think that?s the mentality we?ve got to adopt and have in every game.?

Allen, Magee enter camp same way
July, 19, 2013
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. -- Will Allen is entering his 10th season and the Cowboys are his third team. Brandon Magee is an undrafted rookie.

They will arrive today in Oxnard not via the Cowboys? charter flight, but by car because they have been in Southern California working out prior to the start of training camp. Despite their different resumes, they have the same feeling of anticipation.

?You want to have that feeling and that?s what football is all about,? Allen said. ?It?s about to be real. It?s about to happen. You get that little bit of anxiety and it?s exciting.?

Allen?s first camp was in 2004 with Tampa Bay. The Buccaneers trained in Orlando.

?It was hot as crap,? Allen said. ?I was a young rookie trying to figure it all out and it was fun and I learned a lot, but it?s all a blur right now. I remember being really hot.?

Ex-scout Bryan Broaddus: Will Allen brings some calmness to Barry Church, who can be a train wreck

TEN THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT NEW DALLAS COWBOYS SAFETY WILL ALLEN: By no means did the Cowboys make a big splash in free agency this summer. But the team did a few players who could contribute including ex-Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back Will Allen. Here are 10 things you may not know about him:

By SPORTSDAYDFW.COM

Published: 29 July 2013

Ex-scout Bryan Broaddus joined G-Bag Nation on 105.3 FM The Fan last week. Here are some highlights.

On having Will Allen listed as a starter:

?I did not have the highest opinion of Will Allen. I though Will Allen was maybe going to be a band aid, a bridge player to the next guy, a veteran to start the season off. I think what he brings to Barry Church or playing next to him is a clam presence. Barry Church can be a train wreck out there not as far as not knowing what to do but just banging people everywhere, kind of playing crazy, overrun a play. I think Will Allen bring some calmness back there to him. Maybe he can kind of reign him in and say you go make that play, I?m going to be behind you, that kind of stuff. Instead of playing (J.J.) Wilcox and Church together right now, where both of them are just see ball, hit ball, I think you need someone on the back end when they play deep thirds that he?s able to kind of rotate over, help the corners, be solid, be dependable and make a nice solid play instead of going for a big hit like you might see from Barry Church.?

No real battle at safety because injuries, absences but Will Allen's strong play has provided comfort

The Cowboys entered training camp hoping to see if rookie J.J. Wilcox and second-year man Matt Johnson could develop enough to compete with veteran Will Allen for the starting spot at free safety.

Wilcox, who has been up and down, has missed the last week because of his mothers death and will miss the preseason game against the Cardinals Saturday. Johnson, who missed all of season with injuries, has been out the last two weeks with a stress reaction in his ankle. There is no timetable on his return.

It has all left Allen unchallenged for the starting spot next to strong safety Barry Church. Though he got the job by default, Allen's presence has been a boon to the secondary. He has played well but he also stepped in as leader on defense.

So while the Cowboys may be disappointed in lack of competition at safety, Allen's strong play has allowed them to be comfortable with outcome.

"Absolutely. And that?s why we brought him in here," coach Jason Garrett said. "He?s a veteran player. Our coaches have been around him. We know what he?s all about. He?s providing some veteran presence. He?s playing well both on defense, he?s been a very good special teams player and he has a real positive impact on our team."

Will Allen bringing attitude to Cowboys D
August, 15, 2013
By Todd Archer | ESPNDallas.com

OXNARD, Calif. ? Safety Will Allen has made a good first impression on the Cowboys.

Barring something unforeseen, Allen will start the Sept. 8 season opener against the New York Giants. In the training camp practices, he has been physical and talkative attempting to help bring an attitude to the defense like the one he came from in Pittsburgh.

?It don?t even have to be compared to Pittsburgh,? Allen said. ?We?re trying to build something here in Dallas. We?re trying to build our own identity, our own personality, our own extra level. I?m a part of this team now and I?m trying to help this team win and be great.?

Allen started more than eight games in a season only once in his career (all 16 in 2006 with Tampa Bay). He hasn?t intercepted a pass since 2005 in Tampa Bay. Both of those years he played under Monte Kiffin, who is his coordinator again with the Cowboys.

?You can?t play defense in the NFL if you don?t (have an attitude),? Allen said. ?That?s the way I know. That?s the way I learned it. I think we?re developing that here. We?ve got a lot of great guys. We?re playing for each other. That?s what it?s about.

"These tough days of camp, the competitive nature of practice we?re having, we?re all standing up for each other.?

Will Allen helps lead kids on the right path in life
WillAllen.jpg

Posted By: Christian Marin

When you grow up with great role models, you turn into one yourself. Will Allen of the Pittsburgh Steelers grew up watching his parents give back to the community however they could. His father would coach his teams and treated every kid on them as if they were his own. When someone needed help, they were there.

“I remember watching my father give back and help kids in the neighbourhood. He would invite people over to the house and he was always an inspiration and a father figure to a lot of the kids in the neighbourhood,” explained the Dayton, Ohio native.

“He coached Little League Baseball and Pee Wee Football and watching him make sacrifices for other people definitely had an impact on my life.”

Due to his father’s unselfishness and big heart, Allen learned the importance of helping those in need and how to treat others. The things that his father instilled in him at a young age have gone a long way and have helped turn him into the person that he is today.

“I think the main thing was that I wanted to give back and I wanted to help other people,” said Allen.

Allen created his own Foundation, The Will Allen Foundation, in May 2008 to inspire youth to attain their personal best and to be an influence in the lives of families in Dayton, Ohio; Tampa, Florida; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Cowboys Safety Will Allen reacts to JJ Wilcox starting over him on SiriusXM NFL Radio

Is J.J. Wilcox taking Will Allen's job?
September, 19, 2013
By Tim MacMahon | ESPNDallas.com

IRVING, Texas – Will Allen, a 10-year veteran who is typically one of the most insightful and accessible members of the Dallas Cowboys, wasn’t in much mood to talk Thursday.

Allen certainly didn’t want to elaborate on his feelings about rookie J.J. Wilcox working in Allen’s spot at safety with the starters during practice.

“Hey, man, I just work here,” Allen said. “That's all I can say.”

Cowboys release safety Will Allen
October, 8, 2013
By Todd Archer | ESPN.com

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys released veteran safety Will Allen on Tuesday.

Allen started the first two games of the season before he was replaced by rookie J.J. Wilcox prior to the Sept. 22 win against the St. Louis Rams. Allen was credited with 17 tackles to go with an interception in the season opener against the New York Giants and two pass deflections.

The Cowboys have not decided how to fill the roster spot.

Allen was signed to a one-year deal worth the veteran minimum salary benefit worth $840,000. He received a signing bonus of $65,000, and $555,000 of his base salary was guaranteed. Allen played for defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and special-teams coordinator Rich Bisaccia in Tampa Bay and was viewed as a solid locker room presence.

After being released by Cowboys, Will Allen in Pittsburgh

Veteran safety Will Allen was one of the few outside free agents the Cowboys brought in this offseason, and he didn’t last long.

But a day after being cut by the Cowboys, Allen turned up in one of his old haunts.

According to Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Allen was at the Steelers’ facility today.

There was no specification of whether it was for an official workout or an imminent signing, but Allen does have background there. He spent three seasons with the Steelers, and they’re in the mood to shake things up after an 0-4 start.

Play long enough in the NFL and it's bound to happen. The coach calls you into his office and tells you your services are no longer needed.

For many, the experience of being cut comes in their first training camp. For Will Allen, it came in his 10th season in the NFL, and it happened after the fourth game of a season he opened as a starter.

Allen, who signed a free-agent contract with Dallas in the spring after three seasons with the Steelers, was cut by the Cowboys Oct. 8.

"I didn't really worry about it," Allen said. "I have very strong faith. Whatever is meant to happen is meant to happen. Obviously, I was upset because I had never been cut before, but my faith really kept me level-headed on what's more important. It didn't faze me as much."

Allen didn't have much time to contemplate unemployment. He was in Pittsburgh the day after he was cut to work out for his old team, and signed the following day.

'Play it Again' with Pittsburgh Steelers safety Will Allen (video)

Former Ohio State star Will Allen enjoys victory in Ohio: Cleveland Browns Insider
By Branson Wright, The Plain Dealer
on November 24, 2013

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The so-called rivalry between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns has been so one-sided that Sunday's 27-11 Pittsburgh win means quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has defeated the Browns in 16 out of 17 games.

Despite the domination, Steelers safety Will Allen not only understands the history of this game as an Ohio native, but also how the numbers don't change the intensity.

"We knew it was going to be intense," said Allen, who played at Ohio State. "It was 3-3 in the first quarter. It was a tough quarter. They played us hard. They were making strides. If you [previously] watch the tape, they were making big plays on offense. The Browns are not a pushover team by any means. We executed today and got turnovers. That helped us."

The Steelers were helped tremendously early in the third quarter. On third-and-7 at the Steelers' 39, cornerback William Gay blitzed and caused quarterback Jason Campbell to fumble. Allen scooped up the loose ball and returned it to the 4. Roethlisberger's TD pass to Emmanuel Sanders gave the Steelers a commanding 20-3 lead.

"It was a great call by coach [Dick] LeBeau," said Allen, crediting the Steelers defensive coordinator. "William came from the outside and got the sack fumble. I saw the ball, scooped it up with one hand and started trucking down the field. I was hoping to score. I should've scored, but we scored on the next play so it was all good."

Defeating the Browns is not only good for Allen because of the rivalry and key conference game for the Steelers, but it's a especially a bonus for Allen and Roethlisberger to defeat a team from their home state.

"With us both being Ohio guys, and both playing college football in Ohio, it's good to make our fans from here proud," Allen said. "It's fun to come back here and get a win. It's exiting."
