SAN DIEGO -- The slumping NL West-leading San Diego Padres went about strengthening their standing Saturday with one official trade and another they hope gets Phil Nevin's seal of approval.

San Diego agreed to send first baseman Nevin to Baltimore for pitcher Sidney Ponson, but Padres general manager Kevin Towers said the club had yet to ask Nevin to waive his limited no-trade clause; Baltimore is one of eight teams Nevin can block a trade to. Soon after, the Padres acquired third baseman Joe Randa from the Cincinnati Reds and demoted struggling Sean Burroughs to Triple-A Portland.

"The Padres have not even asked our approval yet," agent Barry Axelrod told The Associated Press. "If they were to ask for our approval, for Phil to even consider it, I'm sure there would have to be some discussion. He and or I would want to talk with the Orioles and find out what his role would be there."

With Ponson acquired by the Padres, the Orioles' deal to acquire Florida Marlins right-hander A.J. Burnett has been shelved.

A three-way deal with the Orioles and Texas Rangers, which would have sent Burnett to Baltimore, was "killed" by the Orioles this weekend, a baseball man familiar with the deal told ESPN.com's Jayson Stark. So the Marlins are believed to have broken off talks with Baltimore, at least for now, and are back to focusing on offers from the Chicago White Sox and the Boston Red Sox.

Florida, Baltimore and Texas had structured a complicated three-way trade that, theoretically, would have allowed the Orioles to assume most of the $21 million left on Marlins third baseman Mike Lowell's contract by jettisoning Ponson. Ponson has about $13 million remaining on his contract, which runs through 2006. But Baltimore and Florida would have assumed a large chunk of that and then traded Ponson to the Rangers, who would have picked up the rest. Texas also would have saved another $2 million by dealing outfielder Richard Hidalgo to Florida -- meaning the Rangers would have been getting Ponson for only about $3 million.

But that whole scenario became moot when Baltimore apparently decided it didn't want Lowell, it couldn't be sure of signing Burnett and it had a chance to trade Ponson to San Diego for Nevin in a joint salary dump.

The Ponson deal was agreed upon once he refused a trade to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for left-handed reliever Trever Miller.

The Padres have a need for a starter. Adam Eaton (9-2 in 14 starts, 3.42 ERA) has been on the 15-day disabled list since June 23 because of a strained tendon in his middle finger. The Padres said Saturday they have no plans to send Eaton to the bullpen once he comes off the DL.

Now the Marlins have to try to find a taker for Lowell and Burnett or return to the possibilities with the White Sox and Red Sox.

The White Sox figure to head the list of other deals, with prospect Brandon McCarthy the main part of the package along with starter Jose Contreras. The Red Sox's offer would include Double-A pitching prospect Anibel Sanchez and right-handed pitcher Bronson Arroyo.

Nevin started in the Padres' game Saturday at Philadelphia and went 1-for-3 in a 2-0 loss. Ponson started for the Orioles against Tampa Bay, pitching seven innings but taking the loss in a 3-2 defeat.

"Obviously it's not going to happen without our approval," Axelrod said. "So obviously, it's not close to being done."

In December 2002, Nevin refused to waive his no-trade clause and killed a deal that would have sent him to Cincinnati for Ken Griffey Jr.

"It kind of goes back to what happened in the Cincinnati deal," Axelrod said. "Kevin had a deal made, then called and asked if Phil would accept it. I said, 'No way.' Phil's criteria has always been that he would like to play for a West Coast team. He wants to play for San Diego. He doesn't want to leave here. He's got a new home being built here.

"But if they've arrived at the conclusion that the profile of the team needs to change in some way, then we'll re-examine the circumstances when we're asked," he said.

That could include asking for more money.

"I suppose we could try to exact something out of them, but it hasn't gotten to that point," Axelrod said.

Nevin is making $9 million this season and is due $10 million next season.

The Padres are known to have shopped Burroughs but ended up having to option him to Triple-A Portland so he can try to regain his batting stroke. He was hitting just .255 with one homer and 15 RBI. Burroughs, the son of former AL MVP Jeff Burroughs, has shown a remarkable lack of power, hitting only 11 homers in 1,487 at-bats since he made his big-league debut in 2002.

If the Nevin trade goes through, the Padres plan to use Randa at third and Xavier Nady at first base.

The Padres got Randa for minor-league right-handers Justin Germano and Travis Chick.

"It's been pretty apparent that something was going to happen," Randa said. "I'm relieved. This has been hanging over my head. You wonder when it's going to happen and where you're going."

The Twins were also interested in acquiring Randa before the July 31 trade deadline. Randa, an 11-year veteran who spent six seasons with the Royals before signing with the Reds as a free agent, batted .289 for the Reds with 13 home runs, 48 RBI and a .356 on-base percentage.

"When you're 25 or 30 games out in August, you have to find motivation," Randa said. "When you're in a pennant race, you don't have to find motivation. It's out there on the field."

San Diego lost its sixth straight Saturday, falling 2-0 to Philadelphia and seeing its lead in the weak NL West cut to three games over Arizona.

The two minor league pitchers that the Reds received for Randa were Justin Germano and Travis Chick. I had posted in another thread how significant it was that the Reds lacked any groundball pitchers, a problem which is greatly magnified when the Reds play half their games in the launching-pad known as Great American BallPark.

Justin Germano appears to be the groundball pitcher I've been hoping the Reds would acquire. Germano is a 22 year old right hander from Pasadena, CA who appeared in 7 games for the Padres last season. He was hit pretty hard, with a WHIP of 2.11, a BAA of .341, and an ERA of 8.86, but hey, he posted a K/9 near 7 and he only served up 2 dingers, so there may be hope once he learns the strike zone. The knock on Germano is control, but he is praised for a deceptive, sneaky delivery from 3/4 arm angle.

Scouting report lists his pitches as:

Curve
Velocity: MINUS
Movement: AVERAGE
Notes: Big And Slow Break But He Threw It For Strikes

Four Seam
Velocity: AVERAGE - MINUS
Movement: AVERAGE
Notes: 88-91 Fairly Straight Fastball

Change Up
Rating: PLUS
Movement: AVERAGE
Notes: Tailing Action
He'll probably wind up learning another pitch and perfecting the three he throws, but in any even the stat I'm happy with is the 39 groundballs versus 14 flyballs on 411 pitches for a GB/FB ratio of 2.79. Of the 31 career hits surrendered, 10 of them went for doubles. So while he's been hit hard, they stay in the park, which makes him a better choice than Milton in my book. :wink2:

Sidney Ponson is the iron pyrite of MLB.

What the hell is so damn attractive about a fat guy from Aruba with a career ERA of 4.78, WHIP of 1.43 and W-L record of 76-88? This year? He's 7-8, with an ERA of 6.04. Yeah, I'm trading a power hitter for this guy.

The Padres might as well trade Nevin for a bag of magic beans...

Chick might be the steal long term. A young power arm in an organization completely devoid of such a commodity. All in all a suprisingly good haul for a 35 year old rent a player.

I enjoyed Randa's time with the Reds, he's a class act and I hope he has continued success with the Padres.

Padres just traded for an All-star from the Pirates, Adam Frazier. I admire the willingness of the Padres ownership/GM to be aggressive and sign stars to big contracts as well as make big trades to maximize their current roster. In an era when many MLB teams are pinching pennies and taking half-measures, it is refreshing to see a franchise that isn't one of the usual suspects pulling out all the stops.

Padres, pitcher Yu Darvish reportedly agree on 6-year, $108M extension

The San Diego Padres and right-handed pitcher Yu Darvish have reportedly agreed on an extension that will keep him with the club through 2028, according to MLB.com reporters AJ Cassavel and Mark Feinsand.

The reported six-year, $108 million deal comes after one of Darvish's best seasons. The vet is 36 years old and will be 42 during the final year of the deal.

Prior to this extension, Darvish was to hit free agency after the upcoming season. With his extension's average annual value at $18 million, the deal could help the Padres with luxury tax issues. The team has the third-highest payroll in baseball and maintains Darvish at $3 million less than the annual average of his previous contract.

Darvish's age is reportedly not a concern for the Padres, as his stats show no signs of decline. His most recent campaign featured a 3.10 ERA in 194 2/3 innings, his second-highest season total since joining MLB in 2012. He led the Padres in strikeouts (197) and wins, finishing 16-8. He went 2-1 in four postseason starts during San Diego's run to the National League Championship Series.

The five-time All-Star is 95-75 in 10 major-league seasons. Playing for the Padres, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers and Texas Rangers, Darvish has recorded a 3.50 ERA with 1,788 strikeouts. He finished as the Cy Young runner-up in 2013 and 2020.
