San Francisco 49ers (official thread)

Still don't understand who what why when or where the Patriots got more in a trade for Brandin Cooks than they did for Jimmy Garappolo but bless their little hearts for it
Jimmy had started two games and was going to walk. I wouldn't have given up a first for Cooks, but he's been a 1,000+ yard receiver the past three seasons and the Rams have a two-year window.

People about here in the Bay Area are pretty excited about this 9ers team. Dante Pettis especially is getting some positive buzz among the young players. Looking forward to seeing this outfit play tonight for the first time.
I got to watch bits and pieces. It's the first preseason game, so...ehhhhhh...can't really glean much from it. But...

- The OL is gonna be my 1a of concerns for this offense. I'm sure it'll be better than the death bomb it's been since, oh, about mid-2013, but I'm not sure that says much.
- 1b will be the receivers. I'm not sure how the state of this position group isn't taming some of the hysteria. Pierre Garcon and Marquise Goodwin are ideally backups. And while Pettis is getting buzz, I'm always hesitant to read too much into a rookie WRs press clippings until he puts together a few games.
- A few guys got banged up last night, and after all of the injuries the past few years...UGH.

I definitely think this team is moving in a positive direction. I'm definitely optimistic about Jimmy G. But, I'm not sure all of the hype is realistic at this point. Yes, they won 5 straight and 6/7 to close the year (and even beat some decent teams!), but I still see a lot of issues. Personally, I wouldn't be shocked to see a 8-8/7-9 season. If they can win 10-11 games with this roster, then Jimmy G just might be the second coming of Montana.

Agree about the line. Especially at guard. And you have a rookie starter too. That's not ideal.

I'm actually OK with their receiver group. Garcon caught 113 balls the last time he had a healthy year playing for Shanahan. Goodwin looked like a solid #2 last year. Agree about Pettis. Good buzz is nice but it's hard to count too much on a 2nd round rookie.

I'm seeing 9-7

All things considered, and despite the ugly stats, that was fairly encouraging. On the road against one of the league's best defenses and they were in it until the very end. Clean up some errors (fumble at the goalline, reciever receiver falling down leading to a pick) and they very well could have pulled it off. Offense was definitely sloppy, not surprising given the circumstances, but the D looked pretty decent and Buckner could be a breakout player this year...he looked like a beast. I still say 8 or 9 wins.
