San Francisco Giants (8x World Series Champions)

The Three Alou Brothers Make History: All Three In The Same Outfield!

The three Alou brothers: Felipe, Matty , and Jesus, all played together in the same outfield for the Giants. Three brothers in the same outfield had never happened before. In the game, played on Septembe 15, 1963 at Forbes Field, the Giants defeated the Pirates 13-5 in front on 18,916 fans. The game featured Hall-of Famers Willie Mays, Orlando Cepeda, and Willie McCovery for the Giants; and Roberto Clemente and Bill Mazerowski for the Pirates.

The three Alous played together in eight games in 1963. Felipe, then 28, was a regular outfielder for the Giants; Matty, 24, was a defensive replacement and pinch hitter who started only six games; and Jesus, 21, was a September call-up. They played in the same outfield for a few innings in three games in September. In spite of some lingering baseball mythology, they never all started a game together.

Jesus made his debut on Sept. 10, and it was uniquein its own right: Manager Al Dark had the Alou brothers bat consecutively in the eighth inning, Jesus and Matty as pinch hitters before Felipe came up. The Alous went 0 for 3 against the Mets’ Carlton Willey.

On Sept. 15, the historic day, Felipe played all three outfield positions, and Matty and Jesus joined him in the outfield as late-inning substitutes. Two days later, Felipe started again and Matty and Jesus moved into the outfield late in the game. On Sept. 22, they played in the outfield together one last time, with Felipe again starting and ultimately playing all three positions before Matty and Jesus flanked him in the late innings. The Alous all played in the same game one more time, on Sept. 25, when Felipe started and his brothers pinch-hit.

The next season Felipe was traded to the Milwaukee Braves. The brothers all played at least 15 seasons in the major leagues, but there were no more all-Alou outfields!

Felipe was the best of the Alou brothers with 2,101 hits from 1958-74. Matty had 1,777 hits from 1960-74 and Jesus had 1,216 from 1963-79. The Alous, some of the first ball players to come from the Dominican Republic, played a combined 47 seasons. Matty Alou passed away in 2011.

Friday BP: HBO working on a Willie Mays documentary

Hello and happy Friday.

A quick note: there will not be a recap of tonight’s game between the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres.

Thursday was the 90th birthday of the great Willie Mays, and news broke on Deadline that HBO is working on a documentary about the Say Hey Kid. Mays told the publication that “Some say that throughout my life I have inspired others, but the truth is that so many have done this for me. My teammates, my friends, and of course the fans mean so much to me. And so I hope this documentary can give back to all of them something enjoyable and inspiring in return.”

Put this one in the “must-see TV” bin.

San Francisco Giants acquire Kris Bryant from Chicago Cubs for two prospects

The San Francisco Giants added some punch to their lineup, acquiring star third baseman Kris Bryant from the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline, it was announced Friday.

The Cubs received two prospects in return -- outfielder Alexander Canario and right-hander Caleb Kilian.

Just sayin' I don't think the Giants gave up too much here, Canario was their #9 prospect and Kilian was their #30 prospect.

Cubs got a 3rd prospect name Bag O'Cash. He's a proven winner.

Yeah, getting rid of the remainder of Bryant's $19,500,00 (salary for 2021) contract is a proven winner; not to mention the contracts of all the others too:

The Cubs have made the Kris Bryant trade official, sending him to the San Francisco Giants for a pair of prospects. That trade now means that the Cubs have traded Bryant, Jake Marisnick, Javier Baez, Trevor Williams, Craig Kimbrel, Ryan Tepera and Anthony Rizzo all within the last two days.

Bag O'Cash is a proven winner in the NBA too. I got a laugh out of a trade that Utah and OKC:

OKC get Derrick Favors and a future 1st round pick
Utah gets a future 2nd round pick

Basically Utah gave OKC a 1st round pick to take on Favor's contract ($9.7M in 2021/2022 and $10.2M in 2022/2023). Utah needs to reduce their payroll so they can afford to resign Mike Conley.

Giants become first team to clinch spot in 2021 MLB postseason

After finishing 29-31 during the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, the Giants have turned things around in manager Gabe Kapler's second year. They have the best record in baseball (94-50) with 18 games remaining -- guaranteeing them at least a wild card as they try to hold off the rival Dodgers for the NL West title.

On October 3, 1951 the Giants' Bobby Thomson hit a home run that has been referred to as "The Shot Heard Around The World". Seventy years later (today) the Giants just clinched the NL west with the best record in baseball with a franchise record 107 wins.
