Satellite Radio (XM, Sirius, and Stations) MERGED

The one thing I dont' like about my XM radios is that Sirius got the NFL contract. XM has the better music by far: The Loft, XM Cafe, Frank's Place, Cinemagic, all the "decades" stations...all my presets. When you get tired of one, move to another. My car came with built-in XM and I liked it so well I added a third subscription to use at work all day. My coworkers love it too.

My dad absolutely loves his because he can get every single game of his MLB team. This is the guy who, as a young boy, rigged up a makeshift antenna in the top of their front yard tree so that he could just barely listen to the radio broadcasts on his little primitive radio. Now he can get every single game, digital and perfect...this is a big thing for him. *nostalgic*

So it depends on which you plan to do: listen to music or listen to sports? If it's music, go with XM by far. If it's sports, Sirius has a good plan for now. But like you said earlier, if Sirius can't scrape up enough subscribers...

If Sirius does not get enough subscribers to pay for the costly Stern and NFL they will be out of business. That is my point. Keep an eye on the merger, you read it here first. Who buys who will dictate which equipment works later also. Based on stock price I think XM had a customer valued at over $100K.

I honestly think cable and cell phones will rule the media airwaves in the future.
Bill Gates tends to believe that cell phones will rule the day as well...they really haven't perfected cell technology yet so I think this will be ten years down the road....I do beleive a single audio/video/digital/PDA/phone will be the wave of the future. Sure wish I would have gotten in Apple 2 years ago :)

I think the question or which one has better music is somewhat impacted by what your musical tastes are. Sign up for a free three-day online membership to each one - you'll be able to listen to all of their stations on your computer - and decide based on that.

babe,

I actually just hooked mine up last night and my wife is listening to it downstairs right now. buckeyefool who you work with actually has the same radio that I do, the Xact radio. You may want to ask him if you can take a look at his. My wife got mine at Sam's Club and they have tons of them. I think it was around $75.

I got the one year membership for about $163 after the $10 activation fee and taxes.

I registered it online and the radio was running about 2 minutes later.

I plan on using mine in the car and in the house so make sure your stereo has the red and white audio outlets on it, like the ones that Playstations and X-boxes have to be plugged into.

asure you radio is on station 88.1 FM to listen to Sirius.

Please feel free to pm me or just post questions on here.

I already love it, your husband will too!

I love mine to. Mine was only 50 dollars from target because it is just the car set up. So if you think he would just want it for the car go for that version and you can always buy the home adapter later.

I personally love it. I got it for Christmas and haven't listened to regular radio since.

The version I had took no time at all to set up. probally took me longer to get the activation than it did to actually set the thing up.

XM vs. Sirius?

Does this belong in this forum? Move it if you want to. Or if you think it would be funny.

Anyway, I'm tired of radio. I get 4 decent channels in Cleveland, and half the time, I don't want to hear commercials or the DJs who think they're funny. Or any other talk show. Rover's Morning Glory is not that good, and neither is Opie and Anthony. And Maxwell is the king of all tools. Play music, bitches!

So a friend of mine has Sirius. He said he got it because of Howard Stern. I don't care much for Stern, really, so that won't be a deciding factor. Is there any other difference between them? Does one have more channels? Better variety? More sports channels? Will either of them have OSU football games? Or other football games? Or baseball games?

Also, my buddy's deal has some kind of priority list. Like, anytime Metallica comes on any station, it beeps and gives him the option to turn to that channel. He said he can pre-set up to something like 30 bands and it will beep anytime any of those bands comes on. Is that standard for all devices, or is that something I should ask for when I buy one?

Finally, do the devices come with a jack so I can take it anywhere and listen with earphones?

Basically, I know nothing about this kind of thing. Any information you guys have about this kind of thing would be a huge help.

Sirius rules. I got it for Howard, too, but I love the other channels as well. I'm also a Clevelander, and your summary of Cleveland radio is dead accurate. In a word, horrible. I honestly have turned back to regular radio only to listen to the Cleveland feed for Indians games, and alas, not even that anymore:( . Probably the greatest thing is that all of the channels are "themed", so you can pick your genre and know that there is an entire station (and in many cases, stations) dedicated to playing that, commercial free. As for the priority function, I believe it's pretty standard (I have the Replay model, and it's on there) on almost all units.

Seriously, I don't know how I lived without it. The $.40/day for the subscription is nothing. I live in the suburbs and work downtown, and in Cleveland that usually means a shitty morning commute (fuck you orange barrels and minivans) which would typically leave me in a bad mood before my day even started. Now, I actually enjoy the drive because I have so many options. Crank on one of the comedy channels in rush hour, and you actually don't want it to speed up. If you spend any sort of time in the car, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

As for Sirius vs. XM, well lets' take a look at each channels big "celebrity" splash. Sirius got Howard Stern (even though you're not a fan, just follow the point), to do his regular show (and several spinoffs) each weekday, and XM answered the call with.... wait for it.... Oprah fucking Winfrey. Let's put it this way, there's a reason the shelves at Best Buy are overflowing w/ XM units, and the Sirius units are in need of constant restock. Best $13/month you will ever spend.

One of the funniest things I've read in a while:

(fuck you orange barrels and minivans)

If you live in Univ Hts, you might take Fairmount to get downtown. I think they're leading the league in orange barrels, at the moment.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll mosey on down to Best Buy at lunchtime to continue my research.
(What a great word - "mosey.")

One more thing I know about Sirius: My buddy got his for about $100, and said it was about $12 a month. Are XM's prices competitive with that?

I believe XM has the same rate.

I picked up Sirius for Howard last summer, so I had about 6 months of non-Stern radio to listen to. The service is incredible. You never realize how many commercials are on regular radio until they're all gone. Some people have said the XM music library is bigger, but I didn't find that Sirius repeated songs much (eh, with as many music options they have it's pretty hard to hear repeats unles syou listen to just one channel). XM has baseball. Sirius has the NFL, NBA, NHL, NASCAR and some NCAA football. I couldn't have cared less about baseball (the Reds are on 700 WLW which can be picked up in many parts of the country), so the choice for me was easy even with Stern being involved.

When I initially bought my unit I had some "buyers regret" for a while b/c I wasn't sure it was worth $12.95 a month for radio. I can say now that it is totally worth it. I bought a second one for my wife's car and use my Sportster Replay in the car, home, and everywhere else. Installation is easy as hell and streaming online is easy too. If you're still on the fence, consider just signing up for a month to month plan, and if it blows you can cancel anythime with no penalties...but after listening to it, I guarantee you'll be hooked.

I got Sirius for Christmas last year, and I love it. There have been times where I have gotten somewhere and stayed in teh car a few extra minutes just to finish listening to something. Stern, the Comedy, and all the music is great. Both XM and Sirius have the different talk readio stations if you are into that. I think XM has big ten football, but Ohio State along with a couple of other teams in the big ten signed on with Sirius.

I also have the Sirius, it's the Sportster model. It's great. All NBA, NFL, NHL, and then some college games. But I might drop the $12 a month because I'm thinking about getting satellite TV, which comes with about half the channels.
