Scholarship Breakdown by Class

Meyer did not say anything Wednesday regarding what two players will not be on scholarship this fall, only that Berger is taking a medical hardship and former walk-ons Craig Fada and Joe Burger will not count toward the 85 after spring and summer semester. Ohio State awarded them financial aid for those two terms Jan. 15.

that list on the 11W link above included Grant Schmidt and Kareem Felder

I should have put it in quotes, but that was 11W summarizing what Meyer said in February. A month before that (when the walkon scholarships were awarded), we were unclear on their longevity. He cleared that up in February and said they expired before the fall.

Some clarification, from Bucknuts:
At the time, Meyer said the players would be eligible to retain their scholarships for the summer and fall semesters if there was room. After the departure of offensive lineman Grant Schmidt and the announcement that Kareem Felder will not enroll, OSU has one available scholarship heading into the summer. It’s unclear whether Burger or Fada will take that spot or if Meyer may use it on another senior walk-on.
Generally, athletic scholarships are available for a minimum of one year. [NCAA By-law 15.3.3.1] However, there is a so-called "One-Time Exception" [NCAA By-law 15.3.3.1.1(d)], which states: "One time during a student-athlete’s enrollment at the certifying institution he or she may be awarded athletics aid for less than a full academic year, provided the student-athlete has been enrolled full time at the certifying institution for at least one regular academic term and has not previously received athletically related financial aid from the certifying institution."

Apparently, Ohio State is (or may be) using this exception with Burger and Fada.

Not trying to trigger a big "star" discussion, but just for S&G I added a new row at the bottom of the chart. It shows how many total 5 star - 4 star - 3 star - 2 star athletes we have by class (per Scout).

We have 61 four and five star athletes on our current roster. That is almost enough to go three deep at every position. By way of comparison, Wisky has recruited 15 four stars in the past four seasons (no idea how many are still on the roster).

Note: I could not find a star rating for Cameron Johnston in Scout.

Also note that of our upperclassmen all of the three star recruits are starters and that (if I am counting correctly) we had 5 three star recruits drafted into the NFL this year.

Over on scout, we were discussing whether the 2018 recruiting class would have a similar numbers crunch to 2017. I thought I'd post my rationale here (the answer is no):

2017 number crunch:

1) Tiny senior class - 5 seniors leaving after 2016

2) Not many RS junior backups - they may only have 1 or 2 buried RS jrs who are obvious candidates (right now) to skip their 5th year.

3) Opportunity - the 2014 & 2015 teams did not allow much opportunity for PT. This spring was the first opportunity for new faces to compete. By this winter, there may be some clarity and some guys moving on, but it's tough to speak definitively right now.

2018 situation:

1) Normal senior class - there are 19 juniors on the 2016 team. Now that number will dwindle with NFL departures, but not enough to compare to 5.

2) RS Juniors - (current sophs) - There are a number of guys here who might choose to move on winter 2017 or winter 2018.

3) Opportunity - they will have played two more fall seasons before that class enrolls. Some will have already moved on and had their spots filled by the 2017 class.
