Scholarship Breakdown by Position and Recruiting Class

Well, I finally got off my butt and updated the chart. I moved Jamel Turner out of the incoming freshman class, and am leaving Jermil Martin as on the team for now pending his transfer rumors.

Official:
[strike]Duron Carter transfer (updated)[/strike]
Keith Wells transfer

In limbo:
Roderick Smith
Jermil Martin (link)

Even if it is formally announced that Roderick is headed to Junior College, it might be more accurate to move him to the 2011 class instead of removing him.

For whoever will update the chart, I believe the linked thread below has the complete list of which sophmores should be moved to the freshmen column as redshirts:

http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/buckeye-football/613041-2009-contest-who-plays-who-redshirts.html

Redshirts:
RB Jaamal Berry
OL Corey Linsley
OL Jack Mewhort
LB Jordan Whiting
LB Dorian Bell
QB Kenny Guiton
WR James Jackson
WR Chris Fields
OL Sam Longo
DT Adam Bellamy
DE Melvin Fellows
CB Corey Brown
CB Dominic Clarke
S Jamie Wood

The info comes from this Ozone article from halfway through the season (pretty sure nothing changed after this): The-Ozone, Ohio State Football, Wrestling, Softball, Basketball, Hockey, Baseball and More

Curious about the obligations concerning red-shirts. Legally and/or morally does the University 'have' to give a player a 5th year scholarship -- if they did not play in a game for an entire season?

Is a red-shirt automatic for a scholarship FB player who does not play their Freshmen year?

Not sure how I feel about it, but there is a lot of talent in the 2012 Ohio high school class, and scholarships may be lost to 5th year players who likely will not be in the two deep.

Scholarships are for one year.

Unlike sec teams, most big ten teams will give players at least four years. Fifth year players who do not play often do not return for a fifth year, for multiple reasons.

So to answer your question, no. Technically Tressel could choose to not invite back underclassmen after a year.

4 or 5 years

I'm not in favor of the SEC tactics for discarding players, but 4 years should be the extent of obligation -- unless promises are made.

Of course coaches have the hard decision of 5th year, fully mature, familiar with the system, 3rd string player ; or the unknown development of a HS Senior.
