The death of safety Sean Taylor hits close to home for Browns tight end Kellen Winslow Jr.

Winslow?s former Miami Hurricane teammate died early this morning of a gunshot wound suffered less than 30 hours earlier.

Taylor starred on defense and Winslow on offense for the 2002 Miami team that lost to Ohio State in a double-overtime national championship game. Both stayed at Miami for an 11-2 season in 2003 before entering the draft together.

Butch Davis, a former Miami head coach who was running the Browns in 2004, targeted Robert Gallery, Taylor and Winslow as priority targets in the draft.

I think I agree with those of you who've said this doesn't smell right..... As early in the investigation as this info is coming out, this sounds like a calculated hit to me.....

NFL's Sean Taylor dies of gunshot wound - CNN.com

"Sean was awakened with his girlfriend and 18-month old baby," Sharpstein said. There were "noises, thumps in the living room." Taylor "got up and locked the bedroom door. Before he could do anything, the door was kicked in and two shots were fired -- one hit him in the leg, one went into the wall."

Taylor "was on the floor, non-responsive, bleeding out and chest heaving, eyes rolled back and he was pretty much gone from that point on," Sharpstein said.

Taylor's girlfriend "tried to call 911 and it's unclear whether the phone lines were cut or the phone was broken or off or unplugged or turned off," said Sharpstein. "She had to use her cell phone to eventually call 911."

This is extra tragic, because it sounds like he was trying to get away from a bad crowd and be the kind of man that people want every athlete to be. He had a lot of problems early in his life, but everyone has said he has really cleaned up his act after the birth of his child. How horrible...RIP and prayers to his family.
