Seattle WR Mike Williams (official thread)

Hmm, while I can't deny I'm pleased that a powerhouse program is without one of it's stars, I don't really see it as a cause for celebration. Actually it's kinda sad that there's yet another 'casualty' from the MoC debacle.

I don't think it is a sad situation. He knew what he was getting into. The NFL TOLD HIM what could happen and he still went through with it. Now he is trying to beg back in to the NCAA. sorry pal. you make your choices and you deal with it. good or bad. right or wrong. obviously he made the wrong decision.

Williams not Reinstated!

LOS ANGELES - Southern California wide receiver Mike Williams has had his request to be reinstated denied Thursday by the NCAA.

USC spokeswoman Vicky Hammond said the school had applied to the NCAA for a progress-toward-degree waiver and reinstatement of Williams’ eligibility.
The ruling came down shortly before the top-ranked Trojans boarded an airplane for Baltimore. They open their season Saturday night against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

Williams caught 95 passes for 1,314 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns last season to help the Trojans (12-1) win the national championship.

The 20-year-old Williams, an sure-handed 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a sophomore last year.

You don't mince words, do you Mili.

It is obviously sad, but it is also self-inflicted.

Kids just don't seem to understand that they have a long life ahead of them and they don't need to rush into every good thing that passes in front of their faces.

What was so awful, Mike, about playing at USC another year and going pro later, like every single kid who ever played college before has had to do? What was the big rush?

You made you bed, Mike, (to euphemize Mili's more direct metaphor) and now you'll have to lie in it. Maybe you can take a bus down to Texas and work out with your dog, MoC.

I don't know, I want to feel bad for him, and I don't know him, so I'm not accusing him of anything, BUT...

Isn't it possible that he basically did what he did thinking "Worst comes to worst, and MoC gets hung out to dry, I'll say I'm a victim of circumstance and they'll reinstate me"? Seems like he may be a victim of bad advice or bad inclination, but not necessarily a victim of circumstance, but like I said, I don't know.

``I'm glad it's over. Now the team can move forward and I can move forward,'' Williams said in a telephone interview. ``I'm disappointed. I did everything asked of me. I don't know yet what I'm going to do. I'll just relax for the weekend and watch the game and root for my team.''

The ruling came down shortly before the Trojans boarded an airplane for Baltimore. They open their season Saturday night against Virginia Tech at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

USC coach Pete Carroll was angry with the ruling and its timing.

``It's very cold and insensitive for them to deny him this opportunity,'' he said. ``As a football team, we've been prepared for this for a while. I'm not surprised by it, but I'm disappointed for Mike and his family. You'll have to go and ask the NCAA for answers, how they can turn someone down who is academically eligible.''

The school had applied to the NCAA for a progress-toward-degree waiver and reinstatement of Williams' eligibility.

USC officials were unsure if there were any appeals still available for Williams but he said he didn't plan to pursue them, anyway.

Williams caught 95 passes for 1,314 yards and a school-record 16 touchdowns last season to help the Trojans (12-1) win the national championship.

The 20-year-old Williams, a sure-handed 6-foot-5, 230-pounder, finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a sophomore last year.

After a court ruled that Ohio State's Maurice Clarett was eligible to play in the NFL, Williams left USC in the spring, hired an agent and said he was turning pro. That made him ineligible to play for the Trojans.

He was projected as a high draft pick, but on May 24, an appeals court overturned the earlier ruling and upheld the NFL's right to bar players who had been out of high school for less than three years.

Williams has been out of high school less than three years, as has Clarett, who was suspended last season after starring at Ohio State as a freshman.

After the appeals court ruling, Williams severed ties with his agent and began the process of applying to the NCAA for reinstatement. He returned to USC and took summer classes, seeking to have his academic eligibility also restored.

I guess i'll be the first to say that decision is a joke. He didn't even make a mistake. The court said he could go. He goes. The court says he can't. He gives everything back.

He's being punished for following the rules. Never did I think he would be barred from playing this year. It's baffling.

Sure he knew, this COULD happen but if he is anything like me I would have seen it as very unlikely, with this and the colorado player, and 5 wrestlers that were set to enter a fighting tournment (but told they couldn't less then 24 hours before hand, although they spent plenty of money training at a fighting school) all happening within the past month it seems like a nice black eye the NCAA's apperence should be given.

I agree...he is taking this much better than I would expect. He was told he could leave by a lower court, which had its decision overturned. He did what he had to do to get himself back into NCAA compliance by giving everything back, and still is not allowed to play. Did anyone ever figure out if he was back taking classes again?
