had a discussion about how attractive are jobs at some SEC schools.

looking like Arky and KY will be available after the season.
possibly Auburn and Tennessee as well.

so i'd like to hear some of y'all opinions since y'all are down here drinking the SEC Kool-Aid all day every day.

how would you rank these jobs vs. other SEC gigs, and how attractive are they on a national level?

and don't base them simply on the mess they currently are.
do it on if you was a coach. (history, recruiting base, facilities, ability to win there,. etc.)

curious to see how people outside of this region thinks.

Chizik without Cam Newton is sub .500 in conference play.

he'll have to go 5-1 the rest of the conf. slate just to break even.
with A&M, UGA, and Bama remaining, he ain't going 5-1 down the stretch.

against his 3 biggest rivals without buying a QB:
0-3 vs LSU (2 blowouts)
0-2 vs UGA (safe bet he'll be 0-3)
0-2 vs Bama (safe bet he'll be 0-3)

in those 7 games, he's been outscored 232-96.

edit to add: this is the 1st season in school history with 3 losses in the first month of season.

I agree he's a shit coach (I can't think of a more mediocre off the top of my head to win a NC), but a NC usually buys a guy a little more rope to hang himself with.

If Tressel lost to Cincy, NC State, and Northwestern and barely beat Marshall

with what seemed to be a 2-10 season on the horizon, would he get another year after 2004?

usually, yes.

in a delusional town that is hopelessly obsessed with their big brother, maybe not.

if Bama was merely "good" during this stretch, then yeah he probably bought himself at least 2 more years.

but Bama being dominant, winning 2 MNC, and favored to win a 3rd while Chizik has 2 mediocre seasons, and is off to the worst start in school history isn't sitting real well with the natives.

throw in that he was hated the day he was hired, and has a horrendous pre-Auburn track record as a head coach.

there's probably 11-13 schools in the SEC (and over 100 in the country) where that 1 MNC buys at least 5 years.

Auburn is one of the exceptionally stupid few where that might not be good enough.

Of those 4 jobs, I would rank them:

  1. Tennessee
  2. Auburn
  3. Arkansas
  4. Kentucky
The Vols are a shade below the very top tier of jobs from my perspective. Auburn and Arky are a notch below that, above most FBS jobs, but not as attractive as Tennessee. Kentucky is a great job if you're a basketball coach... Last stop before retirement for a failed C-USA coach otherwise.

I expect most people younger than me would have a lower opinion of Tennessee. It's been awhile since they were as good as they should be.

Only reason I ranked Arkansas above Auburn was simply because of big brother in the backyard.

They're very close. I almost put them as 2a and 2b.

In the end, I think the rivalry with Bama elevates Auburn in my eyes. It's just a personal impression thing I know; but that's what Nutria' asked for.

Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Kentucky.

I would say that Tennessee is the 3rd/4th best gig in the SEC and should be an attractive job nationally, but a tier below USC, OSU, Texas, Bama, etc. Auburn 6th best in the SEC and marginally attractive nationally.

this is the same order I would rank them (as well as most SEC fans I've talked to).

Tennessee like you said is just a notch below top tier, but has potential to be one of those top tier jobs.

3 different guys have led Auburn to undefeated seasons since '92.
so you can win there.

Arkansas is probably the fifth best job in the division, and maybe 8th best in the conference. still a good job, but not a great one.

Kentucky? who wants to coach in a place that even the students are unaware that they have a football team.

3 rivalries elevate Auburn. Bama, UGA, and LSU

Bama, because it's the iron bowl. guaranteed hype-fest from ESPN, etc. no matter the record of the 2 teams.
LSU, because of e the history of that rivalry. weird shit tends to happen, and it has become "must see" tv because of that. another ESPN media love fest no matter their records.
UGA. not as much media hype, but it is the oldest rivalry in the South, and get's some publicity because of it.

Arky's rivalries that get national attention no matter what:
um...uhhh. can't think of any.

yeah on certain years, they'll have big games.
but nothing on the schedule that you know will be a big, talked about, hyped up game every single year.
