Semantic Web/FOAF/Buddy Lists

Clarity

I'm considering some changes to the site and need some feedback. This isn't something coming down the pipe soon. After the stats engine sometime when I have the time and energy to figure it all out.

The only direct impact on the site would be that your buddy list would be something other registered users could see. Does anyone have a problem with that?

For the curious, the basic concept of the first stage of this would be that you would be able to see who added you as a buddy, who you added, and what users there are reciprocal links for. But beyond that, it would be the first step in a process that will eventually see us (BP) functional and participatory in and on the Semantic Web, and particularly in something called the FOAF Project.

In our immediate sphere, this speaks to interactivity and a more refined and fleshed out community focus and aspect. In the broader picture, it's an early stage toe-dipping into bits of the next generation of the web.

I have no problem with people on my buddy list knowing that they are on the list. I also think that I should know if I'm on anyone else's list. Other than that, I'm not so sure that everyone should have access to others' lists, even if it's display-only. I really have no business knowing who is on KentStateBuck's, DiHard's, osugrad21's, etc., buddy lists, even if I'm on them myself. Just my opinion...

21, I use the buddy list to keep track of the Blog writers. All of them have been set up on my buddy list. Basically it let's you see who on that list is online and lets you send them PMs much easier. For instance, on the front page there is a little box denoting my "online" buddies. I can easily see which of those people is currently logged in at BuckeyePlanet and go directly to their Email or PM screen to send correspondence. You can also open up your buddy list from a link on the navigation bar at the top of most screens. Again, it shows you who is currently online and lets you easily send them PMs (and to those not online). You can even "check" multiple buddies to send out a "mass" mailing instead of sending each PM individually (limit of 10). I guess the biggest advantage is that you don't need to navigate through the Member List (all members) to find who you want to send messages to.

Other than that, I don't know what uses the Buddy List serves. I would like the ability to set up multiple Buddy Lists. Any posibility of that Clarity?

FWIW, I don't care that much if someone can see my buddy list. I think a much more controversial and interesting focus would be if others could see your reputation AND who was leaving the comments/points. Now that would start a firestorm of activity on this site
