SF Alonzo Gaffney (transfer to NW Florida, transfer to Arizona St.)

"Gaffney made perhaps the biggest jump of any of the players we've watched extensively from last summer to now, going from being a skinny, raw and very limited player at last year's Adidas Nations camp to a taller, stronger and far more versatile player just a year later.

Gaffney has big hands, huge shoulders and a 7-3½ wingspan that should allow him to play any position in basketball as his lean frame fills out. His perimeter shooting seems to have made serious strides, which is impressive at that size, and he made a number of jumpers, indicating serious mismatch potential. Gaffney's ballhandling skills are a work in progress, as is his toughness and overall feel for the game, but he shows you flashes of talent in different areas, particularly defensively with his massive wingspan and ability to get off his feet quickly.

Gaffney is a year old for his class, having already turned 18 last January, and his frame lets him gets bumped off balance easily, but he is an intriguing long-term prospect that scouts will want to monitor."

I think prep school is going to help prep Zo a lot.

I don't know if the roster is situated in a way for him to play a ton of minutes and make a big impact as a frosh (though that's possible depending on how much he develops and how much our returning guys might not develop) but I do think he is going to find a way into starter-ish minutes as a sophomore and he eventually is going to be a two-way BEAST.

It's a good question. What will our depth chart look like 2019 assuming no transfers?

Carton/Walker
Luther/Duane/Jallow
Andre/Gaffney/Ahrens
Young/Ledee/EJ
Wesson/Potter

Honestly, when I list it out like this, I really think we are due for a few transfers.

as you mention, many of these players can and will play multiple positions, but I think jallow is more of a 3 than a 2 based on what we saw as a frosh. could obviously change his game some, but doesn't shoot it or handle it nearly as well as Muhammed and Washington. I think andre and Gaffney could just as easily be 4s. andre a bit slow for the 3 and Gaffney needs improved ball skills, though its been improving. I think ledee has better ball skills than either of those 2, but his size matches that of a 4.

a few thoughts:

1. everyone knows it, including alonzo, but he is very weak. if he were to play a college game today, he'd have a difficult time getting a shot off inside 6 feet. like amir did. however, as evidenced by recent comments, gaffney is going to brewster partly to train his body and gain size. this young man with 25+ pounds of muscle and fat is an extremely tantalizing prospect. i think that weight difference could be the difference between getting minor bench minutes and being all-conference as a freshman.

2. gaffney reminds me of kbd guarding the 3 despite not having adequate foot speed. get past either? fine. just be prepared to have your runner swatted when you're confident the defender is well behind you. this is partly why i'm not pigeonholding gaffney as a 4. the trio of, say, liddell/gaffney/kaleb would work just fine.

3. again, just like kbd, boy, do i love guys who can put up "anytime threes." if he wants to shoot a 20-footer, no one is stopping him. and what a pure shot it is.

GAFFNEY’S FIRST IMPRESSION AT BREWSTER ACADEMY
Four-star forward Alonzo Gaffney, who committed to Ohio State in April, opted to transfer from Garfield Heights to Brewster Academy, a high-profile prep school in New Hampshire, for his senior year of high school. So far, it’s hard to imagine he regrets his decision at all.

Playing on a team that includes Terrence Clarke (No. 1 overall prospect in 2021), Kai Jones (No. 53 overall prospect in 2019), Jalen Lecque (No. 29 overall prospect in 2019) and others, Gaffney stood out so much during this weekend’s Caribbean Tip-Off Classic in the Bahamas that he was named Most Outstanding Player.

Gaffney also caught the attention of Jonathan Givony of Draft Express on ESPN. Givony said it’s “tough to find guys with his tools.”
