My understanding is that he has signed an LOI, which means there is a "transfer" at some level which must take place.

So if I agree to go to a college, and back out of my agreement without ever actually enrolling there, then I am a transfer? No, I don't think so. If you are a transfer, you sit for a year. If you renege on an LOI w/o enrolling, you don't.

if the program doesn't grant you a full release from the letter of intent, you do.

sure, if kyle seeks to be released from his loi, it won't be the same as a transfer... but it shares some key similarities. i'm not sure i see the point in debating about semantics, though.

There's a reason Urban Meyer is against an early LOI signing period. It prevents "flips" due to the consequences.

IF he seeks to be released from his LOI - exactly part of my point earlier, he hasn't done that yet, so it is inaccurate to label him a transfer of any kind at this moment.

Everybody would criticize Butler if he wants out of his LOI and they refuse to let him out after his head coach left. But even in that case if he refuses to enroll at Butler, he will still not be a transfer, just bound to his contract to not play anywhere else for a year. There isn't a good term for what he is right now other than "Butler signee".

I think it would reflect extremely poorly on Butler if he wants out of his LOI and they do not let him out of it in these circumstances. I do not see Butler denying a release from the LOI as a likely outcome, hence I ignored the possibility he could have to sit a year. I would estimate over 90% of similar cases the kid gets his release.

    you don't know that.

edit: in my opinion, the debate about how to label what young would be if he is released or if he is seeking to be released from his letter of intent is just a matter of semantics. it's terminology.

ohio state officially announced today that holtmann has completed his coaching staff. of special interest is when exactly pedon was officially hired. schrage was likely hired earlier in the week, while johnson might have been a couple days ago (as his twitter page reflected). pedon's twitter page, however, showed no change a couple days ago, and i don't think it did yesterday. it does now.

the reason pedon's official hiring date is important is that pedon and holt were the primary recruiters of young. the signed letter of intent dictates that no program may recruit young by contacting him (and that young may not seek to be recruited). if pedon was not an official hire until today, then i suspect there was some flexibility in what he was permitted to do. as it stands now, though, holt, his staff, and any official representative of ohio state may not recruit young.

i am still optimistic that young will be a buckeye, but i'm not as optimistic as i was earlier this week. i will be a little surprised if young doesn't make a statement before the weekend.

His h.s. coach said he is mulling it over and would likely make some kind of public decree, one way or another, within 3-4 days. I do think he must get a release from Butler BEFORE anyone on the staff can contact him directly - but like with other similar situations, like true transfers, a lot of back-channel contact happens ( via hs coaches and various other intermediaries ) and so both sides tend to know where they stand along the way even before a release is official.

It would be easier with Thompson since he is not under any restrictions for being recruited anymore.

This team needs guards much more than a combo F. Young will not provide much this season as Tate and KBD will get a lot of mins and AWesson and DFunderburk would be okay as the bench Fs. Thompson COULD help a lot this coming season and beyond, and they could still easily sign 2 more in the 2018 class since Kam Williams is a SR and only 2 guys project to return in 2018-2019 in CJJ and BB, not exactly a ton of talent and depth there!!!

I also am for Thompson coming over, because I see his value beyond the point guard position, and his value defensively being able to guard both 1s and 2s, but I also see where the people who feel it will cost us down the road are coming from. My stance is that if we use him as a Shooting Guard with only one other at the position on the roster I feel like we could make it work.

This is incredibly short-sighted thinking. Yes, the team can use guards next year, but there is no guarantee that we don't need talented F's either. Wesson and Funderburk have shown nothing offensively at the college level. Tate and KBD might play a lot of minutes, they might get injured, they might....who knows? Young is an Ohio stud who plays at a bona-fide B1G level...to minimize his recruitment, again, is short-sighted.
