SF/PF Keita Bates-Diop (Phoenix Suns)

I guess I did not realize that he had mono. I can remember Matta saying that he had a sore throat but that was all I heard.

It was interesting in the article that none of the players supposedly knew that the guys were going to transfer while Matta Knew somewhat in advance that they were leaving.

Ohio State basketball: Keita Bates-Diop, now healthy after bout with mono, moving forward with Buckeyes who stayed

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Keita Bates-Diop didn't like standing under the Ohio State basket in black warmup pants and a white "Always Reppin'" Nike shirt. That brought questions.

Why wasn't Bates-Diop playing? He looked fine.

He wasn't.

"It's not breaking a leg or something like that when you're obviously done," Bates-Diop said Wednesday. "You have to explain to people what the deal is. You're super tired, exhausted, can't eat. You have a super sore throat."

OHIO STATE'S KEITA BATES-DIOP TALKS PLAYER TRANSFERS, HIS HEALTH AND FUTURE OF THE PROGRAM

“We’ve pretty much settled into who we have and I think we’re looking forward to it,” Bates-Diop said. “We’ve got a good core group coming back and I think we’ll be good.”

“Part of this year was just being young and working through freshmen and it was my first year really playing. Me, Kam and Quan kind of working through our first college experience and struggles,” Bates-Diop said. “Now we have a full year under us and all that stuff that we dealt with with the turnovers and little things and the people leaving that didn’t want to be here it’s going to help us a lot.

At the end of the regular season, and especially during the NIT, we were without probably our two best players overall in KBD and Tate. Looking forward to seeing Keita back at full speed next season, along with Tate, Lyle and the frosh/transfer coming in. Wesson, especially, I think will be pretty good by the time he's an upperclassman, though I don't expect him to set the world afire in 2016-17.

Mono is a bitch. So freaking weak with that stuff basketball is probably an impossible endeavor. Glad he's healthy again.

I want to see that KBD that we saw at the very beginning of this season. I really thought he was the best player on this team and the one with the most potential in those games but he disappeared about mid way and never came up again.

“Keita is done for the season. He’s going to have surgery next week and that’s definitely a punch in the gut to us," Matta said afterward. "It is what it is. We’ve got to keep moving forward."

Bates-Diop was averaging 9.7 points and 5.2 rebounds per game for the Buckeyes. Matta said the plan is for the junior forward to take a medical redshirt. He's eligible for one because his injury occurred prior to the deadline.

Forward Keita Bates-Diop said after Holtmann's introductory press conference at the Jerome Schottenstein Center that doctors cleared him to resume full basketball activity a few weeks ago. The Buckeyes ruled Bates-Diop out for the remainder of the 2016-17 season in early January with a stress fracture in his leg.
