Ohio State basketball lands Louisiana transfer guard Cedric Russell

Ohio State filled a big hole in its roster on Friday with the transfer news of Louisiana guard Cedric Russell. CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein was the first to report the news.

A fifth-year senior, Russell comes to Columbus to fill the void left by leading scorer Duane Washington’s decision to opt-out of his senior season at Ohio State and keep his name in the 2021 NBA draft.

At 6-foot, 2-inches, and 190-pounds, Russell led the Ragin’ Cajuns in scoring last season, averaging 17.2 points per contest. He was an All-Sun Belt performer that entered his name in the transfer portal on June 30 and chose the Buckeyes over Oklahoma, Marquette, St. John’s, and Texas Tech.

Russell is a scorer first and foremost and can shoot it from deep, nailing 40 percent of his three-point attempts. In other words, he fits the need for scoring from the guard spot, but we’ll have to see how he fits in a Chris Holtmann scheme that likes to distribute the ball to multiple spots on the floor. He averaged just 1.7 assists per contest and 3.2 rebounds in 33.6 minutes of time on the floor.

Landing Russell would not of happened without the recent hire of Tony Skinn. The new Ohio State assistant coach had a previous relationship with Russell as the two met against each other when Skinn was on staff at Louisiana Tech. Russell also didn’t enter the transfer portal until June 30, a day before he needed to enter portal and retain his eligibility for the coming season. His entry date and Washington’s departure created a perfect timeline as the Buckeyes were able to add the 3-point threat without competing against many teams.

Background
A native of Alexandria, Louisiana, Russell initially committed to LSU while playing for Peabody Magnet. As a senior, he averaged 22.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.6 steals and 1.0 blocks while leading the Warhorses to a 38-3 record and the 2017 Class 3A state title.

A three-star prospect in the 247Sports.com composite database, Russell held early offers from Baylor, LSU, Houston, Texas Tech and VCU, among others. He was ranked the No. 341 national recruit, the No. 17 combo guard and the No. 4 prospect from his state.

In four seasons at Louisiana, Russell would play in 124 games and average 11.4 points (and 5.7 threes attempted) per game. He connected on 266 made three-pointers.

Two years ago, attended a leadership camp in Dayton, Ohio, and was randomly paired with Ohio State point guard CJ Walker. Russell will turn 23 the day that Ohio State hosts Michigan at Value City Arena for the final game of the season, which will also be senior day: March 6. His oldest son, who is 4, loves dinosaurs and can tell you how many teeth each type had. He scored a career-high 34 points during his second year at Louisiana, when he went 5 for 8 from three, 5 for 7 from two and 9 for 11 from the line in a 77-72 win at Little Rock.

Russell closed out what would be his final season at Louisiana by putting together the most prolific season of his career. He was named first-team all-Sun Belt after averaging 17.2 points per game while shooting 40.0% (76 for 190) from deep. He ranked 20th among all Division I players in threes made per game (2.92) and scored a season-high 30 points on 6-of-10 shooting (including a 5-for-9 effort from three) in an 83-77 road loss to Arkansas State.

Russell has traditionally enjoyed success while playing against high-major competition. According to KenPom.com, Russell has eight games against Tier A (top 50) competition. He scored in double figures in six of those eight, and averaged 13.8 points while shooting 38.3% (18-for-47) from three and 46.5% (40-for-86) from the field overall in those eight contests.

I'd expect him to pick up a significant amount of the scoring that Washington did last season. Ahrens was inconsistent in shooting and didn't play much defense, and Branhan is just a Freshman. I'd think he would be just behind...

Everyone expects Wheeler to play "light outs defense"; however, IMHO Russell is the new comer most likely to consistently put significant points on the board.
