SG Luther Muhammad (transfer to Arizona St.)

Luther Muhammad emerging as key cog for Ohio State
The Buckeyes might still be spinning the wheel from game to game finding a secondary scorer to support Wesson, and Luther Muhammad has taken a couple turns as an option in that department. It might become a more regular solution for Ohio State as the freshman continues to gain confidence in his jump shot, and he was actually the first guy other than Wesson to put any points on the board after the big man exploded for the first 12 of the game for Ohio State. Muhammad delivered a 3-pointer from the wing to break that streak and added one more before halftime, which might not seem like that big of a deal — but it’s a huge boost when combined with his shutdown work on the defensive end and energy diving after loose balls. Add in the pair of 3-pointers in the second half, and Ohio State was really in business. Muhammad is not only an important part of the foundation for the future, he’s going to play a huge role if Ohio State is going to make the Big Dance.

3) Luther leads the way
Ohio State needs a consistent scorer every night. Luther Muhammad put up a 20-point effort against the Nittany Lions—and was a big reason for why PSU didn’t get conference win No. 2 in Columbus.

Muhammad has had more good games than bad, but is he the definitive “scorer” on the team? Some nights it’s Andre, other nights it’s C.J., and then there are some games where Kaleb goes bonkers and wreaks havoc. However, there really hasn’t been a game where everybody seemed to click.

Hypothetically speaking, if the Bucks were down one with five seconds left in the game, who would get the last shot? Personally, I think it should be Luther. Ohio State needs to develop someone into being “the guy” in crunch time. Might as well be the freshman who has already showed an affinity for playing the game under Holtmann’s watch.

There's hitting the freshman wall and then there's hitting the freshman wall so hard the whole building collapses in on you.

Luther's +/- at NEGATIVE SIXTY for B1G play is, let's say... telling.

He still started last night but only played 8 minutes. I think he is coming out of the starting line-up and CJ is coming back in. Let him see the game first, let him find his energy, and use him for situational D. Maybe used more sparingly and with less pressure, he can end his season on a high note--because he was certainly having a good frosh campaign for more than half of the season. I'd love for him to have some good vibes at the end of it.

I know that's right, kid is a baller but his shot hasn't been falling and his energy has been low as of late which to me just tells me that his legs are gone and that it's messing with his head, the kid is a frosh...let him rest and get his legs back under him (watch more live game and take mental reps) and buckeye nation will be in love with Lu again. and you just know next season he is going to show up in better shape and a better player for having gone through this, it's just his mentality.

yep. given muhammad's tenacity, especially on defense, it certainly seems like he shot himself out of the cannon to start the season without having the experience to appreciate just how long and demanding the college season is. even his defense has taken a hit as a result. over the last few games, i think i've seen him stand upright more than had all the games before. and he's getting his head turned around a lot.

as noted, there are few worries in the long run. i have no doubt that the off-season will be very productive for him.

In many ways, just watching this guy is a microcosm of the whole team. He looks like he is wildly lost in a hopeless attempt to make an impact. All gumpsion, no direction. He’s like Chris Farley in Tommy Boy. And I love Luther. It’s not a direct criticism of him. Just using his on court performance to compare to the team struggles in general. I have said before that I think he will benefit greatly from having true scorers around him. He definitely can help the team long-term. In that way I view him as having more potential than Moose as an example.
