SG Musa Jallow (transfer to Charlotte)

he's gonna redshirt.
i guess the main consideration here should not be jallow's possible impact or even his fitness but instead his volition. the staff is not going to make jallow redshirt if he doesn't want to redshirt. much like a player's early departure, the decision is much less about what may happen on the court and much more about what is going on in the player's head. i guess the only thing i'm certain about is that i shouldn't be certain.

now with all of that being said, if the goal is to get jallow back to 100% by march, then i think that's a huge ask when all we have left is the crucible of conference play.

OHIO STATE'S MUSA JALLOW WILL REDSHIRT, HAVE RECONSTRUCTIVE ANKLE SURGERY THIS WEEK

Musa Jallow's season is over before it began.

He will have reconstructive surgery on his right ankle on Friday and will redshirt, Chris Holtmann said on Wednesday. Jallow, a junior wing, will have two seasons of eligibility remaining as a Buckeye.

"He'll be back in time for a good offseason," Holtmann said.

He did not offer a specific timetable for Jallow's return.

MUSA JALLOW (REDSHIRT JUNIOR)
What he’s done: After playing 68 games across his first two seasons, including 23 starts, Jallow sat out his junior year with an ankle injury. He had arthroscopic surgery shortly before the season began then had reconstructive surgery in January, which ensured he’d remain on the sidelines the rest of the season to take a redshirt. Jallow, in his first two years as a Buckeye, made most of his impact on the defensive end of the court. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound wing is one of the team’s best athletes. Offensively, he’s been a low-impact player, averaging 2.7 points in 14.5 minutes per game across both seasons.

Next season’s outlook: Since Jallow didn’t play last season and Ohio State’s biggest strength will be its depth among wings and forwards, his possible role in 2020-21 is a bit unclear as of now. He’ll have to both show he’s healthy and that he serves minutes in a crowded group. His defense and athleticism will be the two aspects of his game that get him on the court soonest, but it won’t be easy to stand out. He’s one of six players between 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-7.

I will say this -- this is a big time opportunity for Musa if he's got full mobility back. We all know how important defense is to Holtmann and with the Wesson bros and now Luther leaving, Holt's got to replace his three most proven defenders.

Fortunately a gap man D doesn't necessarily put a ton of pressure on individual man D ability but the team effort and communication have to be good and it does help to have at least 1-2 guys on the court at all times who have length and are quick to help. Jallow, Sueing, and Towns are all coming off foot/leg injuries and Towns was never especially quick to begin with. Jallow has the most time in the defensive system, Towns will have had very little. Eugene Brown has plus length and athleticism but will be a true frosh and needs to add strength.

I wasn't sure if Jallow was gonna be able to carve out a role again with the additions of Sueing and Towns but I think it is there now if he has regained most of the quickness and explosion that he had. Theoretically, him and Liddell could end up the lynchpins of our defense next season.
