New Buckeyes: Gayle ready to start next chapter of basketball career at OSU
Q&A WITH RODDY GAYLE, JR.:
Q: What is this time like as you get ready to head off to college?
Gayle: “I’m going there June 10, I believe. It’s very stressful, knowing this will be the last time I will be around my family here. I’m just taking advantage of every last moment I have with them.”
Q: You’ve already been through this with moving out to Utah in 2020. Do you feel like being on your own out there helped you prepare for this next step?
Gayle: “Yes, 100 percent. I think going out to Utah helped from the aspect of me being able to provide for myself and being away from family. I definitely believe that experienced helped me out a lot. The transition to Ohio State should be a lot easier.”
Q: What was that whole experience like to go out there? Just the opportunity you had to play at a major prep school, traveling to tournaments all over the country and being on your own, it had to be fun but also tough at times.
Gayle: “It was really great in terms of preparing me for college. I was able to live in a dorm and be on my own and you had to manage your time. We traveled a lot during the season. That definitely helped and we played against some of the top talent in the country. That was probably the best thing.”
Q: You seemed to do pretty well against some of the top teams. Were you happy with how you and your team performed? Your team held its own against some of those top teams.
Gayle: “I think I played pretty well. There were some things I felt like I could have done better at times just because we were inches away from the playoffs. I feel like we could have made it. We just got going at the wrong time.
“I’m just excited about what’s going to happen next year.”
Q: You committed to Ohio State in November 2020. They’ve had some staff changes since then. What was it that sold you about Ohio State and how have they stayed with you since then?
Gayle: “Even from the first call, I feel like Ohio State has been the most interested in my recruitment. I get calls from Coach Holtmann, Coach Diebler and Coach Netti pretty frequently, even before I committed. It just felt like family to me. That’s where I wanted to be.”

A gym rat with a 40-inch vertical: Meet Ohio State basketball freshman Roddy Gayle
“Offensively, Roddy’s never going to have a problem,” the coach said. “He’s a three-level scorer with a beautiful pull-up, great vertical, can finish left- or right-handed. Offensively, it wasn’t an issue for him. Defensively was the thing, and playing hard all the time, sprinting the floor, those things.
“I think everything about his game translates, because he is a three-level scorer so he’s not a predictable scorer. When he first got to us, his bread and butter was his pull-up jumper and then his second year he really evolved hitting 3-pointers. He’s got a 40-inch vertical, so finishing at the rim at the college level is not gonna be an issue.”

Mr "Ball-Out" looks to be back in action this year. Hopefully he'll get some flushes on the play under the basket like we did for Slam Thompson.

He averaged roughly 18 points per game as a senior. He was ranked as the nation’s No. 46 prospect in the 2021 class, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Holtmann started two true freshmen against Chaminade, as Bruce Thornton and Brice Sensabaugh got the nod in their first-ever exhibition games at Ohio State. In terms of efficiency on offense, though, both left something to be desired....
Roddy Gayle had the best night of any Buckeye freshman on offense, knocking down 6-of-7 shots to finish with 14 points and a plus/minus of 41, and Bowen Hardman silenced some doubters with a 12-point performance on 4-of-6 from 3-point range.

The Branham comparison is spot on. Not saying Roddy will be a 1 and done but so many similarities in their appearance/game

Recruiting “two-way players” like Roddy Gayle
Holtmann said the recent focus has been a little more pointed toward bringing in two-way players, and Holtmann pointed to freshman Roddy Gayle Jr. as an example.
“There’s some natural gifts and talents a defensive player has,” Holtmann said. “Some of it’s the natural ability. If you have a guard like Roddy who maybe’s not quite there offensively yet, you can see his defensive game is ahead of it. When his offensive game catches up in a year, you’re going to have a bona fide two-way player.
