Should recruits commit early?

the Thomas situation also has more to do about the timing of the offer. if all things were equal (meaning we offered Joe the same time as Pitt did) you really think he would still be headed there? Joe made an early decision to commit to a school that was pursuing him hard early in the process and has decided to honor that commitment (something I admire). Colin, on the other hand, received his offers from Nebraska and Ohio State roughly around the same time.
Admirable ... maybe; wise ... not really - kinda like marrying the girl you dated in 8th grade just because she was your first kiss.

The bottom line is this - the kids have to take the best offer, regardless of when/why/how received. In the long run, it will do no recruit any good stubbornly to honor an ill-timed verbal commitment. The reason that there is one Signing Day is so that the recruits have one REAL decision to make - which LOI to sign and submit. Verbal commitments aren't binding, legally or (IMHO) morally.

Choosing a college is a very important decision, and recruits should really look only at the facts and not be swayed by fleeting emotions or some misguided sense of honor. (Of course, my comments apply to all recruits - even Ohio State's verbals - and not just to Joe Thomas).

that we'll land Colin and the DT from Indiana.

that's good to hear...I think both are big keys to replenishing some of the nastiness on the defensive side of the ball. like potential replacements for Bobby and Quinn...

I totally agree...my point was merely that he was man enough to say he was done with the process early and was commiting to Pitt and now he is man enough to honor that commitment despite possibly more attractive offers showing up at his door. like you said...honorable for sticking with his decision, but maybe a tad unwise to pull the trigger so early. it's all a matter of choice...
