NFL jobs seem to crop up every year. There's no guarantee that Michigan is always going to need a coach. While I agree most coaches aspire to go pro, what bigger challenge is there right now than turning Michigan around and bringing them "back." I'm sure i'll take heat for this, but if he chooses to go to the NFL over taking the Michigan job, it would look like he was avoiding that challenge.

Now if Luck says he's staying for another year, i wouldn't blame him for staying at stanford. They would have a great chance at a National Title run. Just my IMO.

whatever happens, he probably just added some cash to whatever contract he signs last night.

Consider this the first of that heat. It is amazing to me from this comment and others I have seen on other boards that Michigan fans have such Ann Arbor centric view of Harbaugh's decision. I have no doubt that Jim Harbaugh would welcome the challenge of turning your program around. To think otherwise is to sell him short. Whether he accepts that challenge will be because he will also consider other things such as the effect moving to Ann Arbor that it will have on his relationship with his kids from his first marriage who will not move back to AA with him or how his current wife will view this move or the relationships he has built with his team at Stanford or any of 100 other reasons.

Its call being a grown up.

I hope he is up to it. I wasn't sold on him until last nights game. After watching RR for three years basically refuse to make halftime adjustments, just watching Stanford in the second half was amazing.

I've seen some of the moronic UM fans out there the last three years. Believe me, if JH opts to not come to UM, what I said will be nothing compared to those idiots.

honestly, the next few days can't pass fast enough. I just want it to be over so we can move on. At this point, I don't know how they can retain RR. Has a coach ever stayed at an institution to coach where he is simple loathed by everyone? (Cooper notwithstanding)

I wouldn't mind seeing him on the sidelines of that stadium he played in last night on Sundays next year. Hearing on the radio/tv this morning that Stephen Ross was in his ear about the HC position of the Dolphins last night as well. Although, Ross is a UM alum (the business school there is named for him after a $100M donation). This is going to get really interesting.

JH seems to be the belle of the ball right now.

You're not kidding. I don't recall a college coach being courted by so many teams on the NCAA and NFL levels. Meyer, when he was leaving Utah, is the only one that comes to mind, but although he was being targeted by several high-profile universities, I don't recall NFL teams clamoring to get him to the extent they are with Harbaugh. This is unreal. And it's the reason I think he will ultimately go to an NFL team--not only will the money be more there, but I'd imagine he will be able to find a team that will give him total control, making him the GM as well.

like I said, NFL jobs seem available every year. There's no guarantee that Michigan will need a coach next year. To me, this is the ideal time for him to come, unless he doesn't want to take on another rebuilding project.

maybe he reads this forum and he'll see my post and think of it as a challenge!
Will the NFL want him every year? Strike while the iron is hot.

Wow - what an incredibly well called and executed game plan by Stanford last night. Hats off to Harbaugh and the Cardinal - they looked very solid and very well coached last night. This Buckeye fan is hoping Jim Harbaugh stays as far away from AA as humanly possible. :paranoid:

Questionable assumption - see this chart, true that is slightly dated but it does serve to illustrate the significant spread in salaries. Well established coaches make good coin - others, not so much. College football coaches can easily get within the range of "entry-level" NFL HC salaries - especially if they are renegotiating position, or making a school to school move if viewed as a desirable commodity, and if the university is actually willing to pony up an appropriate compensation package.
Guess that leaves the money ball in TSUN's court, but I'd be surprised if they tried to totally low-ball Harbaugh (though fiscal constraint may explain why TSUN's AD might favor the less costly hire of Hoke).

I absolutely don't see this being a factor. How many teams would make a straight from college HC to the NFL HC so powerful? Not many I'd venture - and that restraint would be wise.

Not so fast my friend. A short tenure in AA caused Rich Rod to forget how to coach.
Yeah, lets remember how DickRod was a genius who would revolutionize the B10 with his offense. He would also have recruits falling at his feet to play in "his system" at a premier program like scUM. Turns out he was just the product of a special QB/RB combo.

Harbaugh, meanwhile, has a similar story. He has turned Stanford around with a special QB. How will he do with the pressure that would be placed on him in ann arbor? I happen to think he's the best hire for them, but I think it's far from a foregone conclusion he's going to return them to glory. That program is a huge mess right now. There are major deficiencies in several positions on that roster. It's gonna take time to get them back on track. His rise at Stanford coincided with the fall of USC...can he anticipate a similar situation in the Big Ten?

I have no idea if he'll take the job or not. If it comes down to dollars, I think he's NFL bound because SF & Denver are gonna toss a ton of cash his way and scUM is still on the hook for some of "product rodriguez's" contract.

All I know is, if Harbaugh turns them down, they are in serious peril. Hoke is not a great coach. I'd be surprised if they could pry Fitz from NW. They're teetering on the brink of ND-dom right now and the next few days are the most critical in the history of that program.
