Site downtime 08/08/04

Clarity

Site might go down for a few minutes here and there between 5pm and 6pm ET today. Upgrading mySQL and PHP on the main server to compensate for new load levels and the impending addition of the stats server.

Lol, asking for a beer and ordering food are about the extent of my Korean retention right now. It's not that bad, but I watched about 15 minutes of a film in the language the other day, and was only catching fragments of conversation.

Does the site seem slower/faster/same to you all?

The upgrades should be done.

Well it isn't slower...but not noticeably faster either. Hell I don't know...seems about the same to me

Good. It seems marginally faster to me, but more because I'm comparing actual load times in fractions of seconds from now and before. The front page was loading in about .88 seconds before, now it's around .65. Not noticeable to individual users, but across a wide range of people on at once, it makes the machine happier.

More importantly, the server can now handle the strain. Some of you might have noticed some error messages over the past few weeks here and there. That was the mysql server choking under the strain. It's been set up to handle 5 times the load as before, so we should be good for a while, and ready for the stats engine to be put in place.

Way Won-soong-ee pogi caht-ah-yo? "Why do you look like a monkey?" <-- Like I said, I still know a lot of Korean, just not enough to be mistaken as a native speaker anymore. I know enough to order food, beer, and insult someone enough to get in a fight.

I'm sure this is spelled wrong but "Immi shimmi pec pogi dah"

Lol, you can't go too wrong writing it out phonetically, and I read that one just fine. Windows offers a patch that allows you to see and type in Hangul, I have it, but rarely use it. As far as language maintenance goes, I always meant to keep up with it, but in the 11 years since I left the Corps, I haven't found the time to do it.

I also know how to say "You have nice tits" in Korean, but that's another story.

The site was noticeably slower about two hours ago, but now it seems fine.

I thought it was "Nibi shibi" instead of "Immi shimmi", but I think they'd just as insulted with either one. :wink2:
