I've looked at some of the easier possibilities. The drives being too full (one time a log filled up the /var partition and that shot the load up through the roof), problematic processes, something hanging, malicious incoming traffic (DoS/DDoS) etc., and everything is clean.

One thing I noticed is that we're getting slammed by search engine spiders. During heavy traffic times no less.

I think the biggest issue is that this machine just wasn't built to be a solo effort. It used to have a twin.

Anyway, I'm looking into some setting tweaks for mySQL.

Is there a general time of day when the problems are popping up? It's always fast for me (no page much over 2 seconds, most under 1), but my sleep schedule has been screwed lately and I've been up at night and down during the day.

One thing I noticed about both those pages, is that each has a lot of images pulled into the threads from other sites. Doesn't seem like that should be slowing the page itself down, even if it's taking a while for one or more of those outside servers to respond, but the thought crossed my mind.

However, both loaded for me around 2.2 seconds. So who knows.

Is this a constant thing for you? Or on again, off again?

Are there any sysadmin-types in the house?

It's on again, off again. Haven't noticed that it's worse at any particular time.

Sorry to bring this issue up. I'm sure you have more important issues to deal with.

I would like to know how I can make a contribution to this site. BP is hands down the best Buckeye site and I want to help keep it that way.

Hey Clarity, thanks for that info. Sounds like a beast. Is the sever co-lo'd or do you lease a dedicated server?

Colocated by a friend of a friend. The box fell in my lap after a company I was involved with folded post-9/11. Which made it easy to start the site, but it's not standing up to the pressure very well by itself.

Obviously I meant "dual proc 1Ghz" and not "1000GHz". Dual terahertz processors, lol, that would be interesting.

I know this is being addressed, but I figured I would let you know anyway. Just thought I'd let you know. Keep up the great work. :)

Edit: It's been a pretty slow night. I'm getting a lot of 3-8 second load times.

Well, one thing is for sure, I need to find ways to cut down on the queries. Unfortunately, that is way way above and beyond my ability to just apply logic and trial-&-error to compensate for my lack of 'tech' education and experience.

I'm really going to have to push a little bit with the Spring drive. We are rapidly approaching a dire need for a new machine. I think traffic will subside a bit after the bowl game, but it seems clear we have to have a new box in place before next season.

412 people on (391 as I type this) will do that. The site is getting slammed. I've turned off a ton of 'extra' features temporarily and that's helped a little bit, but the poor machine is just getting smoked. CPU is at 100%, RAM being used to the full extent.
