So... what's up with the new advertising?

OCBucksFan

I won a math debate
I see there's some new advertising, normally, I don't really click through (I know, I am a bad person) though, I have clicked through quite a few of the sports related ones, but the new ones seem to have no sports relationship. I saw one, that said "take the dumb test" so I clicked it, went through the test and answered like 25 or so questions, then it asked for my name, address, email address, and zip code, so I entered some fake shit, nope it knew what was what.

So I entered my old address and went from there, it in turn asked me to enter like 60 different spam campaigns.... I selected no to all of them, but it made me select yes to one, only to have a prompt I could say no to later.

These were like:

Do you want a free xbox?
Do you want a free ipod?

The type of stuff that you get in pop ups on a really shitty blog...

I love this forum, and I love being here, so I have to ask this, what can we do, as a group, to keep the ads sports related? I don't want to see this place become like clublakers.com where I have to get a pop-up everytime I click a link :(

I'll have more information soon, I hope, as our relationship with SportsWar is in a bit of flux right now.

They're running bulk ads right now from a few different networks that deal in such things. As a result, the quality of the ads has been reduced drastically. I've had to bring a few issues to their attention over the last few weeks, but those have been addressed.

You shouldn't see any pop-ups or pop-unders. There should be no streaming audio, the ads shouldn't under any circumstances extend beyond the boundaries of their normal borders. If you (or anyone) sees ANY of this, or anything otherwise similarly out of line, please let me know.

I am sick about the current state of affairs with the advertising. It is in a sorry state, and it's bringing in less than the site costs to maintain. I hope that this will change once the season begins, and we'll have relevant advertising again, but I just don't know. Like I said, things are in flux.

I would like nothing more to either have locally relevant advertising, or no advertising at all. Indeed, I'd like nothing more how to figure out the latter. I hate having it on the site. I didn't mind the NikeID stuff, or Lowes, Toyota, etc. It was sort of fun in the Nike case, really, and I know some people bought the shoes. That's wonderful, and exactly what I had in mind when we brought in ads -- but this ... you're right, most of these ads are shit. Not all of them, but quite a few.

Anyway, let me know if you see anything out of line. If anyone has ideas about how to improve the ads, or get rid of them all together, I'm open to just about anything. In the meantime, I'm waiting to hear back from the guys at SportsWar, and when I know what they're doing, I'll post something here in the Admin forum.

Just know that no one is more unhappy about the current state of affairs than I am. It and the SW issues have literally consumed me the last 5-6 days.

I just had a pop up, or pop under... whatever you want to call it, on the forum main page. It was one of the little windows that showed up for a second then went behind the main window. It was something to the effect of " Ad doubleclick". I just right clicked on the taskbar icon and closed it down. That's the first time I've ever had a pop up on this site.

If you see a banner ad for a dumb test, and proceed to click it anyway, then you've already failed the dumb test.

Wait, or maybe that would mean you passed the dumb test?

My real observation was that the advertising doesn't seem to fit the audience. Build-A-Bear and T-Mobile doesn't seem to fit the group we have here, the ads seem more like something that would be on ebaums world or a similiar forum, not a popular sports forum.

It's disappointing that we are getting things we were specifically trying to avoid... especially after Clarity spent so much time trying to find an ad company that he could stomach using. Sounds to me as though their projections were overly optimistic and this is a reaction. Hopefully it can be worked out, as a company focusing on sports sites should be a better fit than most.

When it comes down to it, the site must be able to pay for itself and not be coming out of Clarity's pocket, so I'm going to keep clicking those ads and hope it pays off for the site. I do wonder if we could be more effective in handling our own ads on our own terms. The advantage to using this type of company is that they do all the legwork and management, and have more oomph (technical term) due to representing multiple sites. On the other hand, if I were running a business in Columbus, I'd jump at the chance to advertise on BP. Strong local connection, I'd venture to guess a more affluent and educated crowd than you get through most advertising routes, and a group with a strong tendency to support those who support BP.

It would be nice if we could do both.

Please take screenshots of any pop-ups (if you can) and post them here. I already talked to them about one, but it should have been taken care of already. It wasn't a pop-up 'ad' per se, it was some sort of survey about the ad. Which doesn't make it okay -- I couldn't have been more clear to these people, so many times, that I never wanted to see a single interstitial ad on the site -- but my understanding is some advertisers quite literally sneak the extra code in.

Anyway, they tell me I need screenshots. I'll sit here and reload the page for a while, but if someone else sees one and can grab a shot of both the pop-up and the banner displayed at the time it appeared, that would be helpful.

I'm deeply sorry that we've had pop-ups or unders here.

I see two alternatives.

1) Over time enough people make small monthly recurring donations that we can get by without ads, and I joyously remove them entirely.

2) Someone sells local and nationally relevant ads and we handle everything ourselves. Serving them wouldn't be a problem, I've got the software. The someone or someones would make some bank on their commission.

Beyond that, I hope that we're back to targeted ads when the season starts, but I may be hoping for too much. I still expect to have more information in the next few days. The current situation with the ads is unacceptable, and has been for some time.
