MOSCOW (AP) -- The United Nations has criticized Russia for ignoring the ecological impact of construction projects for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
In a report obtained Monday by The Associated Press, the United Nations Environment Program says government assessments do not take into account the effects the various projects will have on the region's unique wildlife.
The report is to be published Tuesday and is based on the U.N. program's three-day trip to Sochi in January.
Ecologists charge that precious wildlife has been destroyed, water has been contaminated by heavy metals and the construction of the facilities is amateurish and hazardous.

it appears after the "green games" of canada (which is nothing but a joke of a pr campaign anyways) environmental concerns have clouded the sochi games. sochi is a gorgeous city on the black sea.

I agree that the PR thing and the hand wringing in Vancouver was one big self-congratulatory joke - but I also don't underestimate the Rooskies ability to cut corners in such a devastatingly toxic way that people will pay for it for generations.

Who do they think they are? The Chinamen?

Jamaica bobsled team qualifies

Winston Watts and Marvin Dixon qualified to represent Jamaica in next month's Olympic Games in Sochi in a two-man sled, the first time a bobsled team has represented the Caribbean island since 2002.
This will be Watts' fourth Olympics after competing in 1994, 1998, and 2002. It will be his second appearance in a two-man sled; in 1994 and '98, he competed in a four-man sled.
Despite qualifying, the team might not compete in Sochi due to funding. Team members are hoping the Jamaican Olympic Association steps in, or donations will come from elsewhere.
"In truth, we still don't really know at the moment if we'd even have enough funds or sponsorship to fly to Sochi itself for the Games itself," Watts told the Telegraph of London before the team earned a trip to Sochi. "It all depends. Our families need to be taken care of first. If there's no funding, who knows?
"Hopefully, the Jamaican Olympic Association will step in and support us now we've qualified."

My gosh, I had no idea some of our speedskaters only get $600 a month stipend from the USOC. Although, that may be on par with some other federations.

It's a bad comparison, but I remember reading in 2010 (Vancouver), the Chinese Winter Olympians were fully-funded and got a pretty good wage. But that's government-funded (and it's China) and the USOC is independent.
