Spring Fundraiser and a New Server (Merged)

If we can get people to step up and contribute, we could pull this off somewhat soon.

Scarlet and I predict we will be handing clarity a $1K check or so from the shirt project, and it sounds like Charlotte will be doing the same (thanks a ton man, I appreciate you stepping up and giving like that. Heck, I'd give him his own medal for something like that).

We are at just over 1K right now, so hypothetically we are at 3K. We only need 5K more.

There are a couple of ideas out there which might be a great way to help raise additional funds. One individual has sent me an image of an eddie george signed program that he wants to donate and have the proceeds go to BP. If everyone contributed one buckeye item (clothing, memorabilia, artwork), and then we held a silent auction here (and anything that didn't sell could be ebayed).... we could raise some more money towards the server. It would not be a BP sponsored thing, but rather something where you could buy something from an individual and they'd happen to send your payment to BP instead.

Maybe one day BfS...if you train and study really hard and say your prayers and take your vitamins....you can become a Super Mod and handle all of these suggestions you love to throw out. Work hard and good things will happen..

BFS is one of those "idea people", man.

On the auction idea...

I am currently in charge of creating an electronic auction site for work. I am using an oracle database and ASP, but the structure and logic should be universal. You will likely be going with a third party site (because it is easier), but, if for any reason, you need any of my general technical research on the subject...it's available.

BFS,

After switching the producer of the shirts I am estimating that the profit will be 1500.00 if we sell every extra shirt at the Spring Game. If we don't I'll be able to sell some of the shirts to people I know and some people at one of the bars I go to.

I wish I could step up and donate more like some of you are choosing to but the fact is that I just can't. I have a hard enough time paying all of my bills. I've been fortunate enough lately to have had a bonus check from work so I was able to give 80 bucks in the past couple of months (50 once and 30 for the spring drive) but that's not something that I'll be able to do on a regular basis.

Charlotte, I respect what you are doing and I hope that you can rally other posters to do the same. Thank you.

A lot of the pounding that the BP server takes is from visitors. I was wondering, have we considered some type of business model with a revenue stream? For instance, a premium content area of BP that requires a nominal subscription per year, say $5. The recruiting pages and the rumour mill seem like naturals for this.

Some sections, such as the main pages could continue to be free and this would require no real increase in administrative costs because we already have the ability to allow or disallow viewing of certain sections (rumor mill, etc.).

Some people wouldn't like idea , but it probably would drop the server volume a little bit immediately and allow Clarity to have enough resources to not only get a new server but to improve content without making the site inaccessible to the masses. The site could be run on a not-for-profit basis despite some premium content subscription.

Five dollars is a trip to McDonald's guys! If someone isn't willing to pay that much for all that BP has to offer, then I think we have to ask if they really should have access to all that is on offer. How much value do we place on the work that these mods do? What about Mili's videos and recruiting database and the off-site costs of hosting that are being covered by members at their expense?

Universities have had to come to terms with the fact that gift-giving cultures have lost some of their appeal in larger society and that business models must allow self-sufficiency. It seems to me that this would immediately sort out the financial problem and let some people who really work hard for BP get back to doing more fun things!

So, I think we should really talk about a premium content model or another model that requires people to pay for some of what they are using.

Steve19, you have to understand what Clarity stands for... and keeping BP free at all costs is our M.O.

There are a number of valid options, make certain portions pay-based, run banner-advertisements, etc. However Clarity will not stand for any of these options.

With our recent vast improvements, including the video clips, rumor mill (somewhat recent), graphic forum (which soon will include our own photographer), etc... we will have a lot more users. While this might mean even more strain on the server, it also means we will continue to add more users willing to donate money.

As I said earlier, we really should have around $3K by the time the T-shirt project is finished. The remaining 5,000 is a daunting task, but I think its one that we can pull off.

One thing I had considered was giving away a free copy of my 05 tOSU schedule poster to anyone who gives $10 or more. I wanted to find out if my 2005 tOSU schedule could be printed at a somewhat cheap price at a kinko's... and if it was I would send the picture file (the much higher resolution one that hasn't been posted here) to them and they could get it printed for probably a buck. (which is cheaper than the shipping they would have to pay).
