Florida football assistant Stan Drayton to join OSU staff
Published: Tuesday, January 25, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Stan Drayton, a Cleveland native and John Marshall High grad who is currently the running backs coach at Florida, will be named to the Ohio State football staff, most likely in an announcement later this week, a source confirmed Tuesday night.

Drayton will replace receivers coach Darrell Hazell, who left the Buckeyes after the season to become the head coach at Kent State.

Drayton was on the Florida staff when the Gators beat the Buckeyes in the national title game after the 2006 season. He has also coached at Syracuse and Tennessee, among other stops.

Though he has never coached receivers before, he has a reputation as a good recruiter. Certainly, he should help the progress that Ohio State has already made recruiting in Florida.

Drayton grew up in Cleveland as an Ohio State fan and still has family in Ohio.

Ohio State to hire Stan Drayton as Wide Receivers Coach - Along the Olentangy

by Tyler T. on Jan 25, 2011 11:01 PM EST

The hot rumor of the past week has been confirmed: Florida Gators running backs coach Stan Drayton will be the new wide receivers coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. Current Florida Gator commitment and Ohio State recruit Ja'Juan Story broke the news in an interview with Florida recruiting site GatorBait.com tonight. While official confirmation is yet to be released by Ohio State, there is little reason to doubt Story, who just visited Ohio State this past weekend and said he wanted to keep what was discussed "between me and the Ohio State coaches."

Now, Story didn't exactly do a great job of it, but I doubt that Jim Tressel will hold it against him, especially if he ends up a Buckeye.

And props to the original breaker of the rumor, ShakerBuck from the excellent site BuckeyePlanet, who shared way back on January 18th that Drayton had accepted Ohio State's offer. Many, myself included, doubted the veracity behind it, but ShakerBuck nailed it.

Stan Drayton's hiring was hard for me to believe for two reasons. One, he has coached almost exclusively in the South, despite being an Ohio native; and two, he's been a running backs coach for the entire duration of his college career. But Drayton was reportedly interested in returning to his home state, and his reputation as an excellent coach and recruiter clearly interested Jim Tressel.

By all accounts, Drayton's greatest strength is as a recruiter, where he has grown his reputation as a tenacious but honest pursuer of signatures. It is so late in the 2011 recruiting season that Drayton's presence may not pay off, although it appears to have impressed the aforementioned Story. We can expect, however, Drayton to heavily recruit Florida in the coming years.

My only concern rests with Drayton's lack of experience coaching receivers. He's never done so in college but has spent some time in the NFL aiding as an offensive quality control coach. Darell Hazell was one of the best wide receiver's coaches in the country, and under his tenure Ohio State's receivers consistently developed and produced on the field.

How would one quantify how much does one position coach influence that position. For example Drayton being a RB coach will he drift over and help Dick T out with the RBs once in a while? Or Tressel being a former WR/RB/QB coach, how much actual coaching does he do with those positions. Or is it more like each coach has his players and no one else helps them out with their respective positions except Tressel and the Coordinaters.

I am just trying to figure out in my head how fluid the title of position coach is compared to actual coaching.

I'm guessing we'll just run a bunch of reverses next season. :p

Welcome to the staff, coach Drayton!
