COLUMBUS, Ohio - Stan Drayton, one of the top offensive skill coaches in the nation, is joining the Ohio State football staff as an assistant coach working with the Buckeye wide receivers, Coach Jim Tressel announced today. Drayton will start his duties Feb. 1.

"Stan Drayton first and foremost is a fine person and family man. He is a Buckeye born and bred, and will add a tremendous dimension to our football family," Tressel said. "We are fortunate to gain one of the finest coaches in America to serve our kids, school and community."

Drayton comes to Ohio State from Florida, where he served as the Gators' running backs coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2010 season; he also served as Florida's running backs coach from 2005-07, and held the same position at SEC schools Tennessee (2008) and Mississippi State (2004).

With coaching experience and success at every level, Drayton's resume includes stints as an assistant coach at Syracuse (2009), Bowling Green (2000), Villanova (1996-2000), Penn (1995), Eastern Michigan (1994) and Allegheny (1993). From 2001-03, he served as the offensive quality control and assistant special teams coach for the Green Bay Packers, helping them to three NFC playoff appearances. He is a past nominee for the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year award, and was recognized by Rivals as one of the nation's top 25 recruiters.

Three times a first-team All-America selection as a running back at Allegheny (Pa.) College, Drayton is Allegheny's all-time leading rusher and scorer and was a part of the 1990 Division III national championship team.

He still holds the Division III single-season record for touchdowns scored per game (3.2). Drayton was a two-time All-American in track as well, competing in the 100 and 200 meter dashes. A 1993 graduate with a bachelor's degree in English, Drayton was inducted into the Allegheny College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.

A Cleveland native who is a graduate of John Marshall High School, Drayton and his wife Monique have two daughters, Amari and Anaya.

Stan Drayton's hiring official at Ohio State - ESPN

By Adam Rittenberg

Ohio State made it official Thursday and announced the hiring of Stan Drayton as receivers coach. Drayton, who replaces Darrell Hazell, will begin his duties Monday.

"Stan Drayton first and foremost is a fine person and family man. He is a Buckeye born and bred, and will add a tremendous dimension to our football family,” Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said in a prepared statement. "We are fortunate to gain one of the finest coaches in America to serve our kids, school and community."

Drayton served as Florida's running backs coach and recruiting coordinator in 2010 and also coached the Gators' running backs from 2005-07. He has coached running backs at Tennessee (2008), Mississippi State (2004), Syracuse (2009), Bowling Green (2000), Villanova (1996-2000), Penn (1995), Eastern Michigan (1994) and Allegheny College (1993).

He grew up in Cleveland.

Free Bucknuts - Buckeyes Land Drayton As WR Coach

Posted by Dave Biddle on Jan 27, 2011 at 10:56 am

Ohio State has hired Stan Drayton to be its new wide receivers coach, replacing Darrell Hazell who accepted the head coaching position at Kent State.

Drayton, 39, was most recently the running backs coach/recruiting coordinator at the University of Florida. He is a native of Cleveland and played collegiately at Allegheny (Pa.).

I think the Buckeyes knocked one out of the park here. Losing Hazell appeared to be a big blow because not only was he a good coach that was integral in play-calling duties (and got the most out of his wideouts), he was an outstanding recruiter.

In Drayton, OSU found a man from Ohio who knows the landscape of Florida recruiting like the back of his hand. The Buckeyes will always look to recruit the best prospects from Ohio (and the Midwest in general), but the state of Florida is also an important recruiting base for OSU.

Drayton is a charismatic, energetic young coach and I can’t imagine Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel finding someone that would have been better for the job. Like he did with Hazell, credit goes to Tressel for going outside his coaching tree and finding the best man for the position. Tressel and Drayton have no previous ties (other than both being Cleveland-area natives).

I got a stupid question... Drayton played RB, coached RBs and now will coach WRs?

Can someone that knows the ins and outs of coaching answer this. Should we be concerned he doesn't really have experience coaching WRs? Or is it not that big of a transition and we shouldn't worry about this?

Don't get me wrong, I like the hire for alot of other reasons (recruiting, worked in Florida & coming from different backgrounds to give fresh ideas to the offense, could he being groomed for a higher position on the offensive staff, like Hazel?) But that is the only thing that bugs me about this hire (RB coaching WRs).

it's pretty safe to bet he did some WR coaching while being the offensive quality control coach at green bay. and, as it's already been mentioned, taver johnson was a LB coach before coaching cb's and luke fickell never coached LB's before taking that job.

And Fickell was not a LB either...
