Stan "The Man" Musial (MLB HOF, R.I.P.)

He averaged a .976 OPS over 22 years. :yow2:

The numbers are just staggering when you look at them.

Odd to see he and Ken Griffey Sr were from the same HS. (Donora PA)

One interesting function of that bio page is the salary info and conversion tool at the bottom for the old timers.

Converted to 2012 dollars Musial's highest annual salary would have been $671,538 in 1951. That year he led the NL with a .355 BA, had 32 HR/108 RBI and OPSd 1.063.

By contrast to another lefty, Joey Votto makes $25 million a year and his 2010 MVP season line was .324 BA, 37 HR and 113 RBI with a 1.024 OPS.

For further perspective Votto has OPS'd .968 for his 6 year MLB career.

Obviously I'm not knocking Joey Votto here. I'm just pointing out he'd have to be Joey Votto as we know him now for about 16 more years (with a year off in his prime for military service) to be in the same rarefied air as Stan The Man.

The more you look at a top 10 all time hitter compared to the "average" mortals who are simply elite MLB hitters the more amazing it is.
