UNM reportedly working on deal for Iowa's Alford

By Andy Katz
ESPN.com

Iowa's Steve Alford and New Mexico are working out the final details of a contract, and unless there is an unexpected impasse, he will be named the next head coach of the Lobos at a Friday news conference, multiple sources told ESPN.com Wednesday.
New Mexico zeroed in on Alford within the past two weeks while also waiting to talk to Winthrop's Gregg Marshall whose team was playing in the NCAA Tournament. But according to multiple sources, UNM told Marshall on Tuesday that they were going with another candidate.

Cont....

Sources close to Alford said he was looking for a new challenge after going through some tense seasons in Iowa City.

As if trying to get Iowa to be a decent Big Ten basketball team was not a big enough challenge.

Sources said Alford was looking for a school that is passionate about basketball first and foremost after being at a football-first school. UNM athletic director Paul Krebs has pledged to make the Lobos a national program, bumping up the coach's salary more than $500,000 in an attempt to get it closer to Alford's nearly $1 million deal with Iowa.

Can't say that I am totally surprised because he has been under some heat lately with not having more success with his teams at Iowa. Just found this to be an interesting story line. How does everyone think this will effect Iowa in the big ten? Anyone here anything as to who would be the next headcoach if Alford calls it quits?

Alford came in with a lot of hype and going 152-106 over eight seasons hasn't exactly justified his $1 million salary.

1999 20-10
2000 14-16
2001 23-12
2002 19-16
2003 17-14
2004 16-13
2005 21-12
2006 25-9
2007 17-14

Batting below .500 in the Big Ten isn't going to get you very far. I suppose they have lesser facilities and it is difficult to encourage those New York boys to come to come jerk corn.

Nonetheless, the last two years raised expectations that he had finally started to sort this out and then this year he returned to a sub-.500 performance in the Big Ten. One wonders if this is not about handwriting on the wall more than anything else. But then, at Iowa, playing big in the OOC schedule and choking in the Big Ten has always been a tradition in football and basketball, so who knows? :slappy:

Alford hasn't gotten it done at Iowa...although he has been successful in the Big Ten tournament which probably saved his job a few times.....I just don't understand the move......in my opinion it is not a step up as far as programs.
Agree 100% there is no way this is a step up. As far as Iowa goes I don't understand what they are expecting. Maybe I don't know a whole lot about the situation and if so feel free to call me out. Correct me if I am wrong but Iowa isn't exactly a hot bed for basketball talent is it? Unless they hire one hell of a coach or a great recruiter I don't see how they will be in the top 2 or 3 in the Big Ten. Who do they think they can bring in there to make Iowa a big time program? I don't even think they would spend the money that it may take to get a big time coach.

He was encouraged to make this move, from what I've heard.

My guess would be that it's because of the thin ice that you allude to. If he perceives himself as being in something of a "win next year, or else..." situation at Iowa, than even a downward move, as long as it involves greater job security, might make sense.

Just curious but who would encourage him to take a step down a level? Coach Knight perhaps?

Wasn't Paul Krebs, the current AD at New Mexico, formerly affiliated with Ohio State? I read where he is promising Alford a lot of things. However, this is still a mystery to me and it came out of nowhere.

Supposedly the story of Alford and NMU has been out for about a week or at least the rumors have been out there. As for Krebs, he sounds familiar but I don't know exactly why.
