Steve Alford (official thread)

True. Those kind of moments and situations I think everyone kind of remembers where they were at that time. Kind of like the space shuttle blowing up, 9/11, or Joe Theisman injury.

I was watching the game on ESPN when he went down and I remember the ref saying "Jay, are you OK?"

He's not looking for a step up but a step away.

A fresh start at a basketball first school.

yeah...I am aware he has been wanting out of Iowa....but do you really view new mexico as a basketball first school? I view them as not having any significance in the sports world period. Is he really viewed as this poor of a coach that New Mexico was the only place interested? Not that I care where he goes, I just find it as a strange decision.

Yeah but after all that has happened it is good to see that he has made the best of the situation and that everything relatively worked out in the end. I'm hoping a similar ending will happen with Tyson Gentry. I hope he can recover and good things happen to him like good things happened with Jay.

DEFINITELY a basketball first school.

An admnistration that isn't interested in him sticking around...

I have to think that is a big part of the reason. I can't think of many people in life who would take a step down as a career move. I know there are other factors involved when you move but coaches usually don't take a downward move unless maybe they are "asked".

Also, he wasn't doing a very good job in recruiting this year and maybe he saw the big trains (Ohio State, MSU, and the Indiana schools) coming at him.

With three job openings in the Big 10, this is certainly going to change the dynamics of the league depending on who those schools bring in. Sure hope Matta can recruit:)

Maybe he'd rather take this job and spare himself the embarassment of being fired.

Sort of a pre-emptive strike.

i think he should be able to put a nice team on the floor.
hell have
jr giddens (kansas)
danridge

hes got a decent amount of space to pick up some kids. academics arent going to be a major issue at a school like unm. so building fast could be easy. its a .500ish team who sucked in mwac play (4 and 13)

hes got an intimidating as hell place to go into. a town that will but 11,000 per game in the stands to watch womens basketball. in a town with a metro area of 800k with no other major horses in town. aaa baseball is it. hes competing in the mwac.

if im a unm fan (which im not) id like the hire. here is why additionally
take a look at the iowa roster. how many transfers are on there
haulska isu
palmer seton hall
adams juco
johnson juco
lobby juco
smith hargrave

where hes been
iowa (hc)
manchester college
sw mizzou st
nba (dallas/golden st) player
indiana player

the question is where will he get his kids? his iowa teams were mostly iowa boys. does he come back home and fight for indiana kids? or does he try and and lock up nm? or will he specialize on jucos and transfers? combo of this? thats the only interesting issue here to me.

I know a little bit about spinal cord injury and I hate to say this but I think Tyson is not going to have the same outcome as Jay or, for that matter, Adam T. I am pretty sure that Tyson's spinal cord was not bruised but probably suffered more significant damage. Unfortunately, the spinal cord does not regenerate itself. If anyone needed his prayers, he probably needs them now more than ever.

Yeah, Jay broke vertebrae in his neck but didn't have any spinal cord issues.

With all the talk about Tubby being Minny's next head coach then it should be interesting to see who Iowa brings in. I was thinking that out of all the coaching positions available in the Big Ten that Minny would be the least likely to get a decent coach. If Minny gets Tubby, Iowa should be able to upgrade their vacant coaching position a hell of a lot.

People in these parts are excited about Alford.
But, his record says it all.
He's a mediocre coach.
But the conference he will have to play in is weaker, so maybe he'll be a success of sorts.
I'm unconvinced.
