Stupid two point conversions (SimpLLLLLe Jim loves 'em, and so does James Franklin)

With 11:00 left in the third quarter against Virginia Tech... welcome to the Hall of Shame, Paul Johnson.

The GT touchdown made 21-19 (VT was up). The 2-pt conversion would have tied the game. They were unable to convert. The announcer - was it Chris Fowler? - took some time to talk about how dumb the idea was.

GT got the ball back and scored another touchdown. The 1-pt conversion put them up 26-21.

27-26 dumb two point try by Va Tech late in 3rd quarter.

VT just bailed out GT with their own failed conversion attempt in the third quarter. Gotta love the ACC.

VT got the ball back and scored their own touchdown to go up 27-26, and attempted a 2-pt conversion (still in the third quarter). They also failed to convert. GT also tried for a 4th down conversion in their own territory. I don't know what quarter it was in, but it led to one of VT's touchdowns.

I would love to replace "the card" - obviously created by someone who did not consider what happens when you fail to convert (which is more than 50% of the time) - with these simple guidelines:

First half - are you fucking insane? Kick the damn ball.

Third quarter - only consider it during the last 5 minutes of the quarter if the score is low, conditions are going to make it difficult to score again, and you have a chance to tie the game. These would be rare circumstances. Otherwise, kick it.

Fourth quarter - only when you have to do it. If you're down 15 and score a TD, kick it! Going for two too soon - and failing - makes it a 9 point game. Keep it a one score game as long as possible because shit happens.

By the way, if you're leading, only consider it the last 5 minutes of the game if your lead is 1 point or 5 points. Otherwise, don't be stupid. Kick it!

Bah - that's boring. Change it to show the world how dumb the coaches are for even HAVING a card in their position.

Down by 10 - Go for 1
Down by 9 - Go for 1
Down by 8 - Go for 2
Down by 7 - Punt
Down by 6 - Spike the ball
Down by 5 - Go for 1
Down by 4 - Go for 1
Down by 3 - Go for 3
Down by 2 - Go for 1
Down by 1 - Go for 2
Tied - Onside kick
Up by 1 - Go for 1

You get the idea

Not so well for Kansas who went for 2 in the first overtime against Baylor and failed, losing 31-30.

(I didn't think it was a particularly poor decision, seeing as Baylor had scored 21 unanswered points in the last 12 minutes of the 4th quarter and scored easily on their possession in OT.)

Yeah I think when your a big under dog and you can win the game on a two-point conversion you should go for it. It didn't work for Kansas but it worked for TCU.

worked out well for TCU today
That was ballsy. The more I see of Gary Patterson, the more I like him. Even if it failed, in that situation, on the road vs. the #5 team in the country...[censored] it, go for the gusto. He knew Boysee likely wasn't going to lose again, so that was his chance to hop in the driver's seat for a conference title.

Jimbo Fisher with 14 minutes left in the game, down 5. Four minutes later, they got the privilege of doing it (and failing) again.

The good news? FSU beat Notre Dame, anyway.

Yep. Down 14-3 they forego the XP after the TD, so instead of 14-10 (and then being up by a FG should they score another TD, which they did), it's 14-9. Shouldn't even being thinking about 2-pt conversions until you actually need them.
