Sugar Bowl: #3 Ohio State 49, #2 Clemson 28, Jan 1 in New Orleans

This marks the first time Ohio State has been an underdog this season, and the first time since the Buckeyes were a 2.5-point underdog to the Tigers in last year's College Football Playoff semifinal.

As long as the team is fully healthy, I think this game is a toss up. We haven’t looked our best yet this season, but we’ve won every game and looked dominate at times (key words are at times). And in comparison to the Clemson, they aren’t perfect either. They pretty much have the same dynamics and talent as us. They’ve just had more time to work out the kinks. That’s why I think Dabo and all these other coaches lobbied so hard in the past couple days to exclude us from the CFB. No one wants to face a healthy team like us in a playoff situation:supremely talented coaching staff and roster that is fresh and only needs more game time experience to unlock its true potential. I think the media and CFB playoff committee took into account our disjointed season (e.g. lack of a regular training camp, shortened season/cancelled games, and massive Covid in-actives) more than our fan base sometimes. There is a reason why we were ranked so high in the preseason and sky rocketed to CFP positioning after our first game. We all know the talent is here.

Now with that being said, we need to play more consistently in all phases. Defense needs to continue on its current trend and Justin needs to have a short memory about this last game. He’s literally only had 6 bad quarters of football in two years here (NW game and 2nd half of IN) and I’m confident he’ll revert back to his norm (an nfl 1st round draft pick, likely top ten regardless of the outcome of this game). There’s some talk that he’s regressed, but I think it’s more of him trying to do too much unnecessarily and thinking he is Superman. Instead of making the easy play, he’s tried to do the spectacular. I think a game like this will actually let him play more within himself.

Like I said the talent and coaching is here to figure this out and we have to in a short amount of time. Luckily, I think it’s all fixable. I can’t say we will win but Clemson should be just as afraid of us as we are of them. Especially after last year. I expect another great game.

The Buckeyes now have their shot at getting redemption after last year's Fiesta Bowl loss, and a bevy of current and former players took to social media to share their thoughts on getting another crack at the Tigers:

Fuck you, Birmingham.

One positive for the Buckeyes over last year is that Fields' knee is healthy and he's faster this year than last. He wasn't much of a running threat in last year's game, iirc, and it gives Clemson an extra runner to have to defend this year. And three healthy running backs, whereas JK was hobbled the whole 2nd half.
At least until Clemson DL try to snap their ankles like they did Dobbins.

My first thought is that that IU and NU showed the blueprint to Venables and he has a lot more talent to work with.

Rush 3-4, drop 7-8 into zone and it really seems to bother Fields and the WR's. We also seem to stay in those deep routes no matter what, Fields takes too long to get the ball out and Clemson has top shelf DL talent. Something that IU and NU do not.

I have no idea about Clemson's secondary talent or, more importantly, their ability to disguise coverages but that's the first half of the game imo, Fields and the WR's are going to have to make better reads, quicker decisions and get the ball out. He won't have the time he had against IU/NU.
JF is at his worse when under pressure such as when he's blitzed too.

I think Clemsons aggressive will at least lead to some big plays.

I dont think we win to be honest as most here probably know but we will have all the motivation we need that's for sure. Touchdown dog, lost last year to this team, and on top of that Dabo stating 3x we dont belong.

Crazier things have happened I suppose and we've been bigger underdogs before and won.

This thread is in need of some @BUCKYLE positivity. No, I'm not drunk.

I think the Bucks win. They will need some breaks but given the last few games against them, they are due. I like the idea of bringing in Dawand Jones as a sixth o lineman a la Jim Tressel and ground and pound. Turn this game into an ugly slugfest and I like our chances.

I like that idea too. Our run game is really starting to gel. Keep Clemson's O off the field and don't let their D tee off on Justin who continues to stay in the pocket for too long

I think we can hang with them and this feels like a game that comes down to who makes one more stop/one less mistake.

I don’t see us doing anything more than slowing them down when they have the ball. 35-42 points is probably what I expect to give up if we play well.

When we have the ball, we need to take what they give. They can’t drop into the full out zone that gives JF fits and stop the run with just their front four. We also need to take the reins of of the JF run, both designed runs and with having him tuck the ball much quicker when his primary/secondary read isn’t there.
