They are just words.
Not really, until we start hearing folks scream "Measles" when they jam their thumb. There's a reason we say them.

p.s. The first 2-3 dozen obscure words (that I didn't quote) that popped into my head still held a dirty connotation

Sure, they have meaning, but all other words do too. They'll be considered profane until people realize that there's no difference between shit and poop. But a kid can only say one in school. Doesn't make sense. Someone can print "Brad and Angelina not having sex!" in a tabloid, but they can't say "Brad and Angelina not fucking!" Same meaning. What makes them "bad?"

If you're right numbers, 513 & buckyle... then I ask, what's the point in using those words at all?

Because they get to the point. I'm not one for beating around the bush. I could go into a four minute lecture on why I don't care for so and so to be talking to me because of their attitude, rudeness and bodily hygiene, or I could tell them to fuck themselves. I prefer the direct method.

So there's no extra zing behind them whatsoever? All of those t-shirts, chants, angry mobs... turns out they were all just being succinct in expressing their distaste for Michigan. That's kind of us.

There's meaning behind every word. "Fuck you" means "I don't like you". I'm pretty sure if I said the non-cuss word equivalent to someone, their reaction would be quite similar. Cuss words just have a little more oomph. I could tell someone "I'm going to strike your face with a closed fist. Repeatedly, until you are bloodied by my rage". Or, I could tell them "I'm going to knock your fucking head right off your shoulders and piss on your corpse". They mean the same thing. I'm not actually going to knock someones head off of their body, and I'm certain the police would be there before I even had a chance to unzip. And say either one to most dudes in a bar on a saturday night, and the result is the same.

Then why don't people scream 'don't like you' when they're angry? Half the time 'man', 'bitch' or something else gets tacked on the end, so there goes the brevity argument. If a random fan walked up to me as a coach and screamed that, I'd probably chuckle at their strangely reserved disapproval.

Sorry, but this is coming across about like arguing that flipping someone off and giving them a thumbs down holds the same meaning. They're in the same category of disapproval, but one carries with it a lot more power.
